Player Discussion Patrik Laine: Part 2 - Healthy Living Edition

What has struck me the past few games is how slow he is. Slow to skate, slow to make decisions, slow to shoot.

Luckily he has a deadly shot and he has Hutson and Suzuki to feed him on the power play.
But at the end of the game, the winner is the team with the most goal... Then , I take Laine over every forward in the team except Suzuki for a face to face against goalie.
I know Laine have his flaws. But he remains a solid piece

Yeah, I don't mind him at all. Ideally with a much lower salary tho.

He's actually better than Lemieux. If only he had been healthy like Lemieux we would have seen it.

Lemieux wasn't that fast either. Same as Laine, fast when they get into stride but getting into stride isn't the biggest strength for either. I like Laine, because he's the closest to Mario, my favorite if all time, as a package out of the current players.

But I would not expect you guys to see that.

EDIT: Also have to add, when Mario came back after years of hiatus, he was slower than current Laine but he still scored 2 goals and assisted on one in the first game back because players of that level don't need to be the fastest on the ice. I stayed up in the middle of the night to watch that game when Lemieux came back.

Lmfao holy f*** he actually did it

we have guys suggesting he gets traded 1 for 1 for Ovechkin

Never seen anything like this before

Again, sample size. There were a lot of stylistic comparisons between Laine and Lemieux early on in his career, due to similar size and skating and having great hands and some nice dekes to break defenses. So you never seeing it, just means you haven't followed the players career.

I haven't heard this "trade idea" but that's obviously not interesting from either perspective.

You’re too funny dude

You’re too funny dude
History is funny to you?

What other old stuff is gonna be super fresh for you today?

Hell, there's a HFboards thread dedicated to the topic from way back when.

Just for more context since you're apparently new to all this information.

"“Right now, on this ice, he reminds me of Mario Lemieux,” Hossa said. “The long strides, long stick, the vision, the shot, the way he skates. He moves like a young Mario Lemieux. I know it’s not a fair comparison.”"

Here in this clip they say "Marioesque" ;) and they compare clips

And

""He's the first prospect that reminds me of Mario (Lemieux) since Mario," noted one senior NHL scout who was blown away by Laine's performance at the WJC over the holidays, where the 6-4 left winger compiled seven goals and six assists in seven games while leading Finland to a Gold Medal victory at home. "

So it's not just Laine fans who have made the comparison. It was scouts, players and coaches.

Your ignorance of something is not an argument against it.

Here I am just agreeing with them, and you're acting like this was a hot or new take.

Most goals prior to turning 22 years old

Wayne Gretzky 240
Dale Hawerchuk 173
Jimmy Carson 162
Steven Stamkos 153
Mario Lemieux 145
Bobby Carpenter 145
Brian Bellows 133
Patrik Laine 133
Sidney Crosby 132

Hey Sasha, this is for you

Fun little interview with Laine (and Lane) about Lane's passes to Laine on PP.

That's a great piece. Laine thinking Hutson is putting a righty spin on the puck and Hutson saying he doesn't but don't tell Laine is hilarious.

Laine fans out of control

First he gets compared to Lemieux in here, now we have guys suggesting he gets traded 1 for 1 for Ovechkin

Mario could skate faster on 1 leg than Laine .Are most in here too young to see Mario play? .Except for PP goals he is a liability. He is slower than Savard.

Laine is a useful addition to a team like ours, looking to take a step out of the basement. We wouldn't be where we are without his powerplay goals.

That said, his play 5 on 5 is just cringe-inducing. In fact, the whole Heineman - Newhook - Laine line is a disaster waiting to happen every other shift. The same was true when Dach centered that line.

He gets a mulligan from me this year for health reasons, but if it's the same next season, I don't see this being a long-term relationship.

You are mostly wrong. All of these issues are due to one factor that you didn’t mention. Laine is terrible at receiving passes in *most* of the situations. It bounces off his stick a lot and he loses momentum and pace in his game because he has to constantly reposition his stick/body once the puck hit his blade.

That half a second to a second he takes every time to have full control of the puck is enough for his defender to close in on him and that makes Patty rush a play or a pass because he doesn’t have full control of the puck right away.

Once Laine fixes this (I believe the coaching staff is probably already on it) you will see his game flourish. He will have more pace (and will look more engaged) and have more time to make (the right) play and his turnover and *bad* play will go way way down.
