Player Discussion Patrik Laine: Part 2 - Healthy Living Edition

May I ask you if this source is reputable? Now I don't mean repeating the words of Georges Laraque etc, but descriptions of Laine, how MSL and the team hate him, he is persona non granta" etc.

P.S. I translated it using DeepL, so the translation of that is not absolutely perfect.

etc.

I don't think Laine will last in Montreal, but Hockey30 is internet sewer-level.

I hope it's rust. The guy needs to play. Good thing he's on that tournament.

I think it is the opposite, the guy needs rest. He looks burnt out like a lot of other players, not to mention he likely didn't start the season with the best conditioning.

He not only lost lots of time to skate and get in shape when he hurt his knee, but he was in player assistance for like 7 months and didn't have a ton of time in the off-season after that to get into game shape.

Laine hype-video for his time in Montreal:

@Scriptor I vouched to make it more epic than the Demidov-vid, give it a go!

Who will I do next guys?

Unfortunately, I didn't get the best feel from that video because the image is cropped and we don't see the action very well.

I did like that this face without any expression cracks a smile at some point during the reception from. the crowd.

Ye I agree the cropped image got a tad weird. As a whole the vid is also a tad out of proportion, i.e. some clips are way too short and some drag on forever.

The part I liked the most was when the music matched the chill way Laine walked in his purple outfit. The reaction of the fan filming him. The way Laine interacts with the audience.

Thanks for the feedback man! I know the way I can take the next level in my vids: Triple the time I use in them. The 2nd video took 3 times as long as the 1st vid. In my 3rd I'd need to triple again. But then comes time constraints! One way to use same amount of time as on vid 2 is to be better at it. To get better I need to make more vids.

More vids it is then!

It would be nice to see him get his game going at the 4 nations tournament.
Laine and Armia will be fired up for sure, it is an honor for them to play in the national team, there is so much pride in pulling that Leijonat (which means the lions - it’s what they call the national hockey team) hockey shirt on.

This will benefit the Habs when they come back!

am I the only one with whom this does not sit right? I'm starting to sour on the guy.

With the way he's playing, I wouldn't be surprised if he's off the first two lines soon for Finland.

Having said that, I'd like to see him with Nick and Cole in Montreal. I'd like to see if he's at his best playing with other offensive players. This year some time with Nick and Cole. Next year with Demidov and ?

One of the most infuriating things is when one person, side, team, whatever can do one thing and get away with it while the other person, team, side, whatever does it and is punished for it and the intermediary doesn't see anything wrong with it.

I don't think he said anything out of line.

He's not wrong, but he didn't do himself any favours.

It's going to be interesting tho to see how the dynamic of him and MSL evolve.

Dach got the carrot, Laine gets the stick.

Hopefully you see a fired up Laine and this continues when he gets back to the habs.

....and MSL looks likes a genius because that was his entire plan all along.

or

This is the beginnings of a fractured with relationship with him and MSL, and things get incredibly ugly and get's traded sooner than later.

:dunno:

This is an accurate description of the situation.

For God's sake, what did he actually say? That he's looking forward to playing more minutes because he hasn't played enough in Montreal lately. What's not true about that? Besides, I don't see any criticism of MSL. And MSL is not an idiot, he knows full well that every player wants to play and #92 was just expressing his joy. Plus it's a national team and it's more important for Europeans than their leagues and in general representation means a lot to us, more than for Canada or the US.

You're making an elephant out of a fly.

I was hoping for Laine-Aho-Teräväinen for the 4 nations, but replacing Teräväinen with Hintz could be even better, I just assumed Hintz was gonna play center. If the physical things are the lesser of his problems, then getting to play a few games with Aho & Hintz could do wonders to his game. It'll also be pretty telling of his game shape at the moment, if he manages to tank that line then you know it's all on him since he'll be playing with two really good players who he also knows well.

As for the physical stuff, he might say he's feeling great physically and what not, but when's the last time you heard a hockey player be open about their injuries or conditioning? Even according to EDGE stats, the last time I saw there was a clear dip in both his absolute top speed and amount of speed bursts compared to previous seasons, so I'm pretty sure even if he's not hurting or the knee is "fully healed", either his strength etc. are not yet where they used to be or he's generally out of shape from the long hiatus and the knee rehab probably wouldn't have helped with that. It's also very well possible he'll never quite get back his skating, that knee had 4 surgeries already before this most recent injury, makes one wonder how 100% that knee can ever be.

Laine can't skate at an NHL pace anymore and that's the issue. He was never great defensively and would disappear for stretches of games. He still has one of the best shots in the world and is lethal on the pp. 4 knee surgeries have slowed him considerably.

Some medias are really exaggerating.

Laine appears to be a very awkward guy, possibly mildly autistic I would even dare to suggest. His bad social skills and terrible quotes would look different if you just accept that he may be neuro atypical. His addiction to gaming is another reason why I think it is a possibility. I think he doesn't really understand how people will react to what he says, so he often says the wrong thing.

There's two things. First what he says is technically true. Finland doesn't have a very deep roster so he'll probably get to play more.

Now, aside from the shot, he's been a pylon for awhile. Can't make a deke whatsoever, bad passes all the time and some issues with his defensive play. There's no way he doesn't know he's playing subpar, so many plays die on his stick, almost all plays really.

I still firmly believe he is hindered by his injury, there's no way he's 100%. I'm definitely preaching for patience towards him, but he's got to learn to analyze himself better. He doesn't get much ice time for a reason, it's 100% deserved and he needs to own it. With the injury it might even be better for him to play less.
