Player Discussion: Patrik Laine - MOD WARNING IN OP

He didn't get the puck out which lead to the 1st goal though.

Yup, though that goal was even more on Stastny who made that turnover, Chiarot who lost his man completely and even Helle, who did have a very good save on that first puck but failed to recover himself for the rebound. What a terrible (and uncommon) defensive breakdown for EStL line.

(All other three goals on that game were really weak as well. Fleury hoovered that one and Jets had 3 defensive breakdowns.)

Laine probably played his best game of the playoffs so far in this game 4. Contributed in creating offense, getting shots on the goal, his feet were moving, not giving bad turnovers. Not sure if he had any hits.

If he played well Why are people critizicing him in the PGT?

Because he is Laine.

People don't even know that Laine is +5, 5-on-5. Leading the Jets (tied with Stastny and Myers).

People don't even know that Wheeler is -1, 5-on-5.

That's one reason why Laine gets all the blame, reasonable or not. Wheeler (the other TOP-6 RW for the Jets) gets a free pass while being net negative for the team most of the time (which is 5-on-5).

Also people still doesn't realize that it's not about scoring. It's about scoring more than your opponent. Or on the other hand allowing less goals than your opponent.

If you look at those 3 losses to Vegas, they were 100% about giving easy goals against. If they continue on that way, the series is over tomorrow. Sad but true.

According to NHL.com Laine had 7 SOG (where I can see attempted shots btw?), 5 hits and one block. My eye test says He played good match. I thought he is done for the season but he is proving me wrong :)

AFAIK 13 shots, 7 shots on goal. And 5 hits is huge amount.

Well one goal as well, though Jets didn't win so that doesn't matter.

Also no goals against, which is the most common result with Laine.

I haven't still provided those 5-on-5 stats I promised after the Nashville series, but trust me he has been the best Jets winger 5-on-5 these playoffs statistically, yet I haven't really seen that complaining about other TOP-6 wingers not named Laine and Ehlers.

Among forwards

Goals
1.Scheifele 14
2.Stastny 6
3.Laine 5

Hitting posts
1.Laine 5
2.Copp,Scheifele 2
3. Ehlers, Connor, Wheeler 1

Shots on goal
1.Laine 55
2.Scheifele,Wheeler 44
3.Connor 33

Missed Shots
1.Laine 27
2.Wheeler 24
3.Scheifele 17

Shooting%
1.Scheifele 31.8% (18.4% regular season)
2.Stastny 26.1% (10.1% regular season)
6.Laine 9.1% (18.3% regular season)

If he had a bit more luck we would be talking about how great he's been in these playoffs. Had those post shots went in he would be shooting exactly at his regular season shooting% and have 10 goals. Stastny 2 goals and Scheifele 8 goals adjusted to regular season %.

Bonus:

Hits
1.Lowry 44
2.Tanev 43
3.Wheeler 28
4.Laine Scheifele 26

Blocked shots
1. Tanev 18
2. Scheifele 15
3. Wheeler 11
4. Laine 10 (doesn't even play on PK)

I agree with the principle up to a point, and the numbers provide some perspective. Also 12p in 16 games is not exactly bad or even mediocre for a young first timer, unless your name happens to be Laine, in which case I think it's fair to expect just a bit more (though not much...). I don't really agree with the thinking hitting the post is bad luck. It's still missing the net, it's just missing it by a very tiny amount :) The way Laine picks corners he's bound to miss the net and hit posts a bit more than many other players, I think it's just his shooting hasn't been at its best and the margin for him is very small - he scores a lot of his goals from areas and chances where he has to get it right on the mark. He regularly scores goals which would basically be flukes for most other players.

His high shot number seems to be partly from just shooting more than during the regular season. This seems by design and some of those shots have led to assists from juicy rebounds or bounces. But at least to me it seems he's not as selective with his shooting as usual, so a lower percentage is to be expected, just not quite this low - he has been a bit snakebitten and 5 posts is a lot.

It's a bit funny though there's even a conversation about this when a player is having 0.7-0.8 P/GP in the playoffs playing 2nd line minutes. Usually that'd be pretty good even if you're on the 1st PP... In any case I'm not the slightest bit worried about Laine, I'm seeing the playoff mentality and will to win I'm expecting and he's already scored some big goals in key moments, it's just it seems his body perhaps can't quite keep up 100% of the time. He seems to be getting way more criticism than he deserves, if anything he's been average (for him) while there are a bunch of people in the team seriously underperforming and there doesn't seem to be much talk about those players.

He's not even shooting that much more in the playoffs...

Playoffs: 1 shot(including missed) per 3:27 of ice time
Regular season: 1 shot(including missed) per 3:49 of ice time

Playoffs: average shot distance 36.6
Regular season: average shot distance 36.1

I can't even remember what Laine looked like without a beard.

Just had to post... for old-time sake. Fun season here on HF boards.

Like I said last summer......hopefully he works on his skating. Still the weakest part of his toolkit.

Hope he primarily works on skating in this offseason...
Even more he needs better stamina. Inside shifts first of all, but also the long season enduring stamina. And sure, he needs to make his first steps also better, but I still see the stamina issues as his biggest problem so far. When he gets those considerably better, he will already be a much better player.

It was already last summer his primary work to get explosive strength to the muscles that help exactly skate faster. And he focused also in stamina training. He just has so much work to do in those areas that one or maybe even two summers will not make immediate impact. I think we will see a good progress in those areas only in two or more of off seasons.

People are going to be again massively disappointed if they are expecting him to be already much better with his first steps and stamina already next season. More realistic after two good off seasons, or even more. It took Scheifele much longer than two off seasons to get where he is nowadays with his stamina, skating and leg strength. Why to expect Laine to get there much quicker?
