Patrik Laine entering player assistance program

Wishing him luck on this difficult journey. It takes great courage to take this step, and hopefully he can find balance in his life.

I'm seeing it even more with gen Z. To be honest I think it's the pressure of social media and the expectations. Back when we had no social media I felt people didn't compare to each other as much as they do now, they just got on with their own business. Social media has been a cancer to society, I wish we could go back to the way it was before.

In the end of the day people need to toughen up, with that said I have no right to judge on this as I did not grow up in a digital gadget social media world and would now know how my young brain would react to the constant stream.

My advice to young folks is to just shut it off.
Nah, it's mostly them realising they'll never own a home and are on a dying planet, so it's not worth it killing yourself over work.

Teachers, nurses, doctors, police and fire, EMT and paramedics, etc. have stress but don't seem to be taking leaves in large numbers.
I guess they can't afford it whereas high earners can. Might be as simple as that
Excluding the teachers nurses doctors (dont know enough about it)

The other professions can pay for it drastically after with mental issues, ptsd etc...some can be mitigated by getting help along the way and some cant

People in 'important' roles develop an issue where they may subconsciously be trapped, taking leave may initiate never going back

Guy was under immense pressure. He came out of the gate very hot and had a lot of pressure to consistently be at the top echelon of players and goal scorers.

I don't mean this as a joke, but I thought before that he had a bit of an 'addictive personality' so to speak with the Fortnite stuff. Mostly everyone that I know that's had a true addiction to gaming has struggled with substance abuse at some point, too.

Do we really know that he had a ’gaming addiction’ or is it purely speculation and jokes? Regarding subtances, Laine is or atleast was an absolutist, and for example didn’t celebrate his Liiga championship the ”traditional way” with booze.

Well, it's hard to really "know" something like that, but judging from the tracking some people did on his account during that time he was spending a lot of time playing games the night before and was even playing a bunch of Fortnite matches leading up to NHL games.

I'm certainly no stranger to heavy gaming, but it would seem to me he was having a difficult time balancing gaming with preparing for his job.

But...this leave doesn't seem to be happening in the other North American pro sports including MLS and WNBA. Or am I out of touch and it has been just as common?

Same with the various soccer leagues worldwide....and college sports.. And there are countless teams in those scenarios whereas only 32 for us, so there should be many leaves as well.

Why the NHL?

Teachers, nurses, doctors, police and fire, EMT and paramedics, etc. have stress but don't seem to be taking leaves in large numbers.

In regards to the last paragraph, the suicide rates in those professions have risen astronomically in recent years, in part I suspect because taking leave for mental health/stress related issues is not supported like it should be and ridiculed in certain sectors

God Bless ANYONE who needs and gets help. Best thing I ever did was go on anti anxiety and stress medication a couple of years baçk.Should have done it 20 years ago. Makes a HUGE difference not only for me but for the family I interact with on a daily basis

Have Paul Maurice said anything about this yet?! He's partially responsible for all of this with the two way power forward thing that he and the Winnipeg management tried to implement in order to sandbag Laine and get him on a cheap deal after his record breaking November back in 2018. In hindsight that whole thing messed with Laine more than anything. And when you add to that the video game addiction, hair loss and death of his father that followed and now being mismanaged in Columbus, there's no surprise Laine cracked. Such a shame, Laine could've really been something special. Now the best thing for him is probably to retire from hockey and find some other meaning in life because nobody has made a successful recovery from something like this. Just hope that Paul Maurice would admit publicly that he was wrong and say that he's sorry for ruining Laine's career.

I used to think mental health was a joke. I was one of those hard assess that would mock someone for needing time off or a vacation for mental exhaustion. Then I hit a wall and had medical professionals telling me I was literally going to die if I didn’t learn how to calm down, mellow out, and stop working myself to exhausting both physically but more mentally. Long story short I do not think mental health is a joke anymore I’m and massive advocate for it. Full props to Laine. Hopefully he comes back better than ever. The league is a better league with his slick shot part of the game.

I mean Laine himself admitted to traveling with a console which doesnt indicate addiction im sure quite a few players do

The addiction narrative was when he said Him and Ehlers would ask for a separate TV, and even said when they couldn't get and extra one they would get the front desk to go out and buy one, then they would just leave when they left, and he said they game during all their free time.

I want so badly to see Laine become the monster player he showed flashes of in Winnipeg. If he's getting help maybe that explains why he's struggled so much. He has a special shot if the feet are moving to get him there.

They absolutely do, you just don't hear about it due to HIPPA rules and the fact they aren't celebrities.

My brother has been a cop in Nashville for about 20 years, he not only has had to take them but they have forced him to take them over the years. They also keep a psychologist on staff that they make these guys go too, especially after a serious incident. I can't imagine its the only city and the department that is handled that way.

Sister in law has been a nurse for 30 years, 28 of those in triage. I know she has taken more than one leave over the years and I consider her to be one of the strongest people I've ever met when it comes to that kind of thing.

that's explaine a lot about his performance this year. He is still young at 25 I'm pretty sure he will take time to get healthy and bounce back to a PPG player. Good luck to him and I really hope he come back healthy to burn your village ,,,,😉

What does Ja Rule Paul Maurice think?

I've heard this one being told from before Laine's time, only it was the guys buying several sets of Scaletrix or whatever, building a massive track and then leaving it behind for the maid to take home and make their kid envy of the neighborhood.

It's crazy behavior alright but possibly due to all the excess money at their disposal and not necessarily due to a video game addiction.

I think people are over-thinking it a little bit with all the elaborate theories, he has just gone through a couple of really frustrating seasons where he showed good form, but got injured, and never really managed to get back to performing consistently. He probably recognizes that his mental state from all the injuries and prolonged layoffs has affected his gameplay in a negative way and wants to fix that before he comes back.

Laine has never really been a guy who cares about what other people think, online or whatever, but he does care a lot about what he thinks about himself, and I can imagine that he wasn't happy with the way he was playing after getting rocked by Andersson. I get the sense that he wasn't fully recovered from that hit when he started playing again.

Amen. I made it 34 years without ever having a prescription for anything. I am a very high strung person at work (OCD like tendencies, everything has to be done a certain way etc). I started having trouble breathing normally and would feel like I was going to pass out. My wife got me tickets to go see my favorite band (who I had never seen live because they disbanned before getting back together) and the thought of the car ride to the show and the crowd etc made me so anxious we didn't end up going. My wife made me go see our doctor and they put me on anxiety meds. 34 years old and had to explain to a local pharmacy I didn't know how to fill my prescription lol. Anywho it has done wonders for me too, whether actually working or having a placebo effect who knows but the difference is noticable for everyone around me as well.
