Patrik Laine entering player assistance program

Hope he gets the help he needs

Wonder if the seeming recent increase in players entering the program is due to an increase in problems, a greater willingness to admit they have them and seek treatment or a bit of both
Could also be residual effects from the pandemic, as a lot of them had to go through a lot of stress to play in those conditions. Plus not being able to see family for a long time.

That and just getting hurt all the time. Can't be easy.

He gets hurt alot because he's not dedicated to his fitness. When Gary Roberts had to retire due to neck injuries, he took time off and figured out his fitness, recovery, nutrition. Became a guru. Then he came back and played many more years until his 40s. Hopefully Laine finds something like that....or he finds Roberts even!

For sure, that’s something I would include in the increase in problems category. There’s been an increase in mental health and addiction problems in the general population since the pandemic. It would make sense we see that trend with players as well but presumably it’s also being destigmatized and guys who wouldn’t have gotten help before are willing to now

Oh yeah, if he took his fitness seriously, he wouldn't get concussed when Anderson jumps for his head.

its bittersweet to see the number of players reaching out for help. certainly seems like we may be seeing more this season.

Oh yeah, maybe he could develop a sense of humility too. 3-1 Columbus with 10 seconds left, maybe he could not have such arrogance to pad his stats and get the empty-netter leaving him vulnerable to getting popped by Anderson.
Andersson's pride was hurt much more than any physical injury he could bestow upon another human. His team was about to go down 4-1 in a regular season game in October, you can't imagine the scrutiny he would've gotten had he not jumped at Laine's head.

I hope he gets whatever help he needs.

By way of a general comment though. In my industry, a unionized setting, there are numerous people going off on stress and mental health related claims. Is this something that is pervasive in North America these days? I have worked in my job for 20 plus years, and have never seen it so bad with so many people off. Not withstanding the other four who recently went off (probably exceptional circumstances), is this something that might start to proliferate in the NHL? Maybe all these issues were always here, and just not as talked about and supported, I get that. But overall, I feel like more needs to be done to teach resiliency.
