Patrik Laine’s falloff is wild

If you ever watched him in the playoffs, you'd know what I'm talking about.
There is a case that he's not even the 100th best playoff scorer ever. There's a reason he's 0-8 in final elimination games.
Doesn’t mean he’s a huge disappointment. He wasn’t supposed to be on the level of Crosby/Mcdavid. Is Stamkos’ career a disappointment too because he’s been pretty average in the playoffs too.
Nah he really is, guy is paid like McDavid with all the potential in the world surrounded by other great players and he just fails every time.
He will either be the 5th/6th fastest NHL player to 400 goals in NHL history, his season goal/60 is 1st out of all active/retired players all time (wasn't tracked before lockout), his goal/game ranks 5th all time including Gretzky and Lemieux.
Meanwhile in the playoffs he ranks 28th in g/60 among active players, 55th if you include retired players as well and his goals per game goes to 55th all time. For his talent level and team's talent level, disappointment is an understatement. He and Laine both leave you wanting so much more.
Guy is pacing to be near the all time greatest goal scorer ever and over 90 players have put a better 55 playoff game goal scoring stretch than him.

Stamkos since his first playoffs (‘10-11) is tied for 12th in playoff points with 101 (tied with Ovechkin) and 15th in PPG for players with 50+ career playoff games at 0.79 (tied with Toews and Bergeron). He has absolutely not been “pretty average”
Laine’s 0.67PPG for players who’ve played his 24 games or more since his first playoffs (‘17-18) is tied for 78th. Much more “pretty average”. Stamkos, for reference, is at 28th at 0.84PPG over that same period.
I’m not saying his playoff performances haven’t been disappointing relative to what he’s done in the regular season but overall his career has not been. Lainey’s career obviously has been. That’s the difference. After they were both drafted if you showed me their careers up until this point I’d be disappointed with Laines but still impressed by Matthews career despite his poor playoff showings.

Laine can’t even get his team in that situation as “the guy” on his team.
He has a natural talent for shooting and a drive to score, but he is not a hard worker at all and extremely moody in a bad way where failure makes him fail more instead of motivating him to improve.
Where have you been hearing these Habs fans' voices, and what exactly have they been telling you?
The reality is most Habs fans were thrilled to get Laine for almost nothing, for a salary we had plenty of room to afford. His potential was undeniable, as was the risk. Since then, we've seen both. His shot has been a game-changer, but he's also been useless in many games and a handicap with the puck. I'd estimate 95% of Montreal fans know what they're getting with him, for better or worse.

My personal take is that he was never the same after the Mccabe hit. His rookie season was magical. He would walk through defenders, score from distance, and handle the puck with confidence. It pretty much ended with that hit.

I feel like it’s tougher to just be a 40 goal guy now, too. If a shot is literally all you have, opponents will shut you down better now, and your team will notice the analytics and move you down the lineup quickly. 40 goals today is like 30 in the ‘90s, and I feel like someone like Jeff O’Neill maybe got away with shit that wouldn’t pass today. He’s just an example, maybe his game was better than I recall, but you know what I mean? There used to be less scrutiny as long as you scored goals, now teams are more nuanced in what they’re expecting.
Laine strikes me as a dude I might like more as a person than a hockey player.

I think it's a combination of things but one thing ive noticed is that he's a lot more frail than he was before. Laine has next to no muscle mass in a lot of his pictures, he really seems like a guy who was worn out and didn't do any strength work for 2 years. Considering the circumstances, I'm not surprised, but Laine looks very, very sickly.
No matter how many videos Laine posts in the summer of him working out with NFL players running around a field, he just doesn’t seem to have the work ethic or attitude.
IMO, what Laine lacks is a basic understanding of his role. He needs to know he isn’t the same player he was when he was younger with loads of potential. He’s a streaky one dimension winger with a cannon of a shot. Once he stops talking and acting like he’s on Matthews’ or whoever’s level, the better his game will be.

He has 6 points in last 6 games and 24 in his 34 games. Habs record with him in the lineup brought them from lottery guarantee to wildcard. He's no star but not too bad. Habs PP leveled up with him big time.

Insanely talented, but also insanely lazy both off and on the ice. He's also a streaky player so I wouldn't be surprised to see him get a good 5 or 10 good games by the end of the season. Kind of hard to shine playing with Beck and Newhook too...
Such an enigma of a player. He still has one of the best shots in the league, but he's been such a disaster at even strength (38.7% xGF- by far the worst of any regular player on the team) that Montreal's coaching staff had no choice but to move him down the lineup and hide him from opposing top lines.

The guy is a shooter. He's a player who can contribute greatly to a PP and can score goals that turn a game around. He's not Connor McDavid or Nathan MacKinnon, nor is he Barkov. He's not a guy who controls the play or splits defenses and he doesn't do much away from the puck.
This isn't 2019. He's teased a high skill level and tried to round out his game at times (with some degree of success as well) But following his injuries, he is what he is at this point. He can be valuable, but his teams should insulate him and cater to his strengths to get the most out of him.

In all seriousnes maybe he is just a 30-35 goal scorer and people midjudged him on his potential. He also has that streaky trait very common with snipers. Let's not even talka bout his physical health.
