The shot counter definitely screwed Marty, every goal counted obviously but not every save. Ridiculous that the standards aren’t consistent but for him gaa is more representative for comparisons sake
In regards to Marty - wins, shutouts, gaa...all that stuff is great and really speaks to how great of a player he was and the really strong teams we were blessed with for all those years. Thing is, it doesn’t really matter. Imho, that’s all secondary to one thing and that’s the way he played with the puck. I mean we know how great he was at doing it, but I also think we were so used to it that it kind of got to a point where you didn’t even notice it and how much of a factor it played in our game. Even with the trapezoid in place, the Devils literally enjoyed the benefit of playing with 3 defenseman on the ice when Marty was in net. That’s how good he was. I don’t think we’ll ever see a goaltender play the game like him again. Now that a few years have passed, just watch any random old game and you’ll notice how much his play stands out. His stats and records are ridiculous but they don’t even begin to tell the story with him.
