Patrick Roy destroys Anthony Duclair after Islanders’ loss: ‘He was god-awful’

I don't think the contract was that bad to be honest.

3.5M with the cap going up for a guy who has had several top-6 worthy seasons as far as production, and did well with Tampa last year down the stretch after the trade deadline.

We all know he's not a perfect player, but even if he ended up as 20/20 type of guy bouncing around top 6 and 3rd line with some PP time, it would've been fine.

But there's no way around it, he's been brutal. One of the many things that went wrong for the Islanders this year.

I too don't think the contract is that bad. In fact, if Duclair produced at the average level, it would not be a bad contract at all. But he was always a fair-weather player who needed a near-perfect niche to get the most out of him. And there is no such niche in the Islanders organization with its oppressive rules and "work very hard to barely scrape out a win" system.

Decent if in some ways mentally fragile player, a decent contract, and a very very bad fit.

I understand the contract Duclair got; he put up stellar numbers in that brief run with Tampa Bay. Everyone probably thought he had fully recovered from his injury and taken the next step...and maybe both things were not true.
If Lou knew how to use a computer, he could've just done two Google searches to find out that Duclair's most common linemates in Tampa were Nikita Kucherov and Brayden Point, and that since Duclair's arrival Kucherov put up 38 points in 18 games. Maybe he would've been more reluctant to give out that contract.

I think Lou did. Barzal had an 80 point season and Horvat was coming off a 33 goal season. All they wanted was to replace Lee with someone speedy that could pot 20 and maybe play on the PP.

It's not like it was a reach fit-wise and the contract terms aren't prohibited. The guy doesn't get injured and pots 20 and the Isles consider a steal at 3rd-liners money.

Obviously didn't happen and Duclair probably won't be up to full speed til beginning of next season.

Just signed him to a 4 year deal last summer 3.5M.

11 points this season, full NTC this year and next, another Lou special.

Always had high hopes for him when he came into the league, had that one good season in FL but has been pretty terrible since.
"Marquee free agent"

"3.5m AAV"

uhhhhhh I mean, alright. Maybe not the guy I'd expect to get this type of public treatment but I guess that's why I'm not a coach

Lou really doesn’t seem to understand what battles to pick

He gives duclair NTC’s
But in another instance refused to give a high draft pick schedule A and schedule B bonuses on his ELC?

Based on production and effort, he's probably up there in my list of most frustrating players to watch or on paper trying to figure out a spot in a the line up. Have to put him with good players and in the top 6 or is the bench. I'm really surprised he's lasted this long.

No they're not. But they are there to win games. And throwing your players publicly under the bus rarely wins you anything. It's just stupid coaching and pretty shitty behavior from a leader.
Duclair is not helping them win games. If this is being said in public, Roy has probably hammered it into him in the locker room a 1000 times by now.

Certainly not the first coach to call him out.

Why?

He was asked a direct question about the play of Duclair. He gave an honest and correct answer

Part of being a coach is understanding that your words have weight and directly impacts your players. The way Roy answered it is not the only way to talk about Duclair.

And to be quite honest, I don't think Roy has figured out how to coach in the NHL.

Lou's been around for a long, long time.

You'd think, with knowledge like what's bolded above, he wouldn't go and sign that same player to a multi-year deal.

I mean the latter was because he used to build contenders that spent to the cap and didn't want cap penalties the following year.

Duclair is very underpaid compared to what he brought to Tampa last year so it's probably a cause of Duclair taking less for certainty since he's bounced around a lot, This is his 9th team in his 10 year career.

At the same time his advanced stats are wildly different every year. He seems like he needs a full time sports psychologist.

Maybe he sent the exact message he wanted to send

Duclair and Roy have a long relationship. Roy coached him as a young player and recruited him to sign with the Isles. Lack of effort in a high dollar sport is unpardonable

Oh I'm sure Roy has no regrets with what he said. In one season he has openly questioned his GM's moves and also trashed Engvall too. These aren't junior players you can scare into playing well. Coaches have basically been phased out of the league, with Roy it's only a matter of time.

Engvall is actually playing quite well lately and we ALL question Lou's moves

All coaches "lose the room" eventually

That logic would make sense if he didn’t give said bonuses to another prospect at the same time
