“He was god-awful,” Roy said of Duclair, the Islanders’ marquee free agent signing last summer, after the club lost 4-1 to the Lightning and fell five points back of a playoff spot. “He was god-awful.

“He had a bad game. That’s why I didn’t play him a lot. And he’s lucky to be in the lineup. Sorry if I lose it on him right now, but that’s how I feel.”

Just signed him to a 4 year deal last summer 3.5M.

11 points this season, full NTC this year and next, another Lou special.

Always had high hopes for him when he came into the league, had that one good season in FL but has been pretty terrible since.

Scored at a .5 ppg pace since his best year in FLA. not sure that’s pretty terrible. Admittedly he doesn’t contribute in many other ways when not scoring.

“He’s not skating. He’s not competing. He’s not moving his feet,” Roy said. “He’s not playing up to what we expect from him.”
Roy was asked whether he believed effort was a factor.

“I think it’s an effort thing,” he said.

Isles signed Duclair to a 4 yr deal with $3.5M AAV in offseason

Duclair season with Isles

44 GP
7 goals
4 assists
11 pts
-15

There is a clear reason Duclair is on his 9th NHL team at age 29

That contract was mistake by Lou

Blunt, but not wrong.

Duclair's MO his entire time he's been in the league, he's not team swapping because he's consistently valuable. He's still in the league because he has a tantalizing skillset for 10 games, gets a contract and security, then disappears.

Lou's been around for a long, long time.

You'd think, with knowledge like what's bolded above, he wouldn't go and sign that same player to a multi-year deal.

Duclair isn't that good of a player. He had a career year playing with Barkov in his last year with FLA and became overrated, otherwise he's barely a top 6 player in his career.

Duclair has had several runs, and not that long ago, where he does produce like a top six player. That's what sells him, not just the speed and skill. But he often disappears and he doesn't have the well rounded game that will keep him useful. This year he had an achilles injury in the Fall and has barely scored since. I don't know if that is exactly why, since he has never been the type to have a consistent track record.
