42 seconds left in the game, down a goal and on the PK? Yeah there are only bad options. Keep the goalie in and you improve your chances of not getting scored on, but even if you win the face off, what then? The game is pretty much lost anyway, I'd say pulling the goalie like that is the best chance at equalizing and if this was game 7 of SC finals or a gold medal game, where there's truly nothing to lose anymore, would people really think a desperation attempt like this was a bad choice?

If they don't make the playoffs because it comes down to goal differential and it just so happens they have allowed one too many goals, then let's bring this one back to life :D

I didn't agree with the move but the team is so inept and disorganized that it really didn't matter. Toronto played OK but the Islanders are expert at beating themselves in any situation

If the goalie stays in and the Leafs win the faceoff they likely retreat out of the zone and burn a ton of clock playing keepaway with the puck. Extremely high chance you lose.

If the goalie stays in and the Isles win the draw the Leafs have a much higher chance of either winning the puck back in a battle or just forcing the Isles to burn a ton of time.

If the goalie is pulled and the Leafs win the draw, they likely score and you lose.

If the goalie is pulled and the Isles win the draw there’s a much great chance the Leafs retreat into the neutral zone to prevent a player from breaking behind them which gives the Isles a chance to potentially get the puck up the ice.

Yes it increases your chances of losing 3-1 but it also increases your chances of tying the game (sure from 1% to 2% or whatever, but it’s still an increase). In the NHL, goal difference is basically irrelevant so losing 3-1 is really no worse than losing 2-1

Roy's coaching career is defined by goalie pulls after not being pulled that one time. Gotta be some sort of psychological connection there no?

this dude still shellshocked he was left in for 9 goals from 30 years ago lol

makes Mike Keenan look like a blue light special Captain Hook

Being a little eccentric with his empty net strategy isn’t the same as what Keenan did to his starters.

Keenan also played his guys 70 games a year, so if you did get the quick hook, you were still going in next game.

Plus he had Capades Barzal near the crease in the hopes that he'd get the draw and be able to rush it up the ice. In retrospect, it was his version of a hail mary

I assume this is similar to the look I have on my face most of the time when my kids talk at the dinner table.
