Patrick Roy decided to pull his goalie during a defensive zone faceoff while shorthanded

I would like to understand the POV of anyone who says this is a bad idea or that they wouldn’t do it.

There’s 40 seconds left. Losing 2-1 is the same as losing 3-1. If this were soccer where goal differential is the first tiebreaker, then yeah it a bad idea. But in the NHL it’s pretty far down I think.

So, why wouldn't you do it?

I’m a big fan of pulling the goalie aggressively, like with 3 seconds left in the offensive zone regardless of which period it is. Or having the goalie stand halfway to the blue line for a center ice faceoff, rather than hanging back in his net.

In the scenario the Islanders faced, stuck in their D-zone on the PK, I’d do it with, say, 10 or maybe even 20 seconds left. Being outnumbered puts you at a massive disadvantage when your only chance is a single Hail Mary rush up the ice.

But 42 seconds is a whole shift with time for a lot of twists and turns. If you win that draw, you have options for how to get the puck up ice shorthanded while the goalie races to the bench. It doesn’t seem to me that giving the other team a 50% chance of being able to immediately score the ENG of the faceoff is really the best card to play in that moment.

Honestly a good move, the Isles have struggled to generate offense this year, so even if they won the faceoff it's not like it's for sure going to amount to anything considering it's still 5 on 4 and Toronto can be very aggressive. So even in the best case scenario nothing happens when they don't pull the goalie.

But if they get the puck at least they have a decent chance of doing something with it being 5 on 5.

I probably would’ve went with 3 defenseman on that faceoff with the goalie in and if you win the faceoff the goalie sprints to the bench immediately and is replaced by a forward who cherry picks for the breakout pass.

If you don’t win the faceoff, then you’re kinda screwed anyway if you can’t win the puck back in time.

They actually won the draw but it got off the refs skate and bounced to a leaf. Not saying it was the right decision but it was a little bad luck. Also, the few times the isles have oddly been decent this year is when pulling the goalie. Which is strange because the PP is abysmal.

He pulled the goalie with 7 minutes left last game and it worked

Ya I forget the podcast, wanna say it mighta involved Malcolm Gladwell, but some econ dudes looked at the issue and said the goalie should be pulled more towards 5 mins if down by 1, and with a 2 goal deficit it was 9+ minutes. Seems crazy, but if you’re gonna lose anyway why not do it by many goals? And I guess that just kinda maximizes your chances to pull even. Not sure if I like Roy as a coach, but I appreciate how he kinda blazed a trail with pulling the goalie earlier.

You may as well take the risk. Even if your team wins the draw in your own end, it will take a good 10 seconds just for your goalie to get to the bench.

With 42 seconds left it was worth a try. If the Leafs won the draw they would have just killed the clock along the boards anyways.

I watched the Islanders Penguins game two nights ago and he pulled the goalie with like 6 minutes to go, it almost paid off, they were down 3-0 and got within one. It's still weird to me how he manages goalie pulls though lol

Marc Crawford was the first I saw pull the goalie really early down by 2 plus goals. Roy would have been on that team so I guess he liked that strategy.

Really not understanding people criticizing this move by Roy. If the Islanders win the draw they should be able to bring the puck to the Leaf's end of the ice if they have equal number of skaters. With the puck having a goalie isn't so important.

If the Islanders lose the draw their only chance is to regain the puck and go the length of the ice in 42 seconds. That's almost impossible to do if you are down one skater. Even if you do it you still want to get your goalie to the bench which is going to waste 10 of your 42 seconds.

A literal lol here reading this title. Roy will be out of the league again soon. Crazy dude got two kicks at being a head coach simply because of his name. Hopefully someone forces him to work his way up through the ranks now actually learning. Unless its normal for coaches to go from the Q to the NHL skipping other leagues and being an assistant and all that.

So, why wouldn't you do it?

For real? You’re asking why someone would choose not to pull the goalie with a defensive zone faceoff, while shorthanded, with 40+ seconds on the clock? I refuse to believe you’re being serious.

You know how people say there aren’t any stupid questions? They’re wrong
