They actually won the draw but it got off the refs skate and bounced to a leaf. Not saying it was the right decision but it was a little bad luck. Also, the few times the isles have oddly been decent this year is when pulling the goalie. Which is strange because the PP is abysmal.

42 seconds left? Meh. You gotta win the draw, get it down ice, and score. An extra man helps with 2 of those 3.

He also pulled his goalie with like 9 minutes left in that 7-1 Buffalo shellacking- another one that drives people nuts, but statistically makes sense.
He pulled the goalie with 7 minutes left last game and it worked

It's not sound strategy but it's still understandable. I guess one could say it reeks of desperation but pulling the goalie is that by default so it's not exactly that far off.

Not to mention the players are well aware they don't have a goalie in their own zone so they might hike their asses in gear, play with some more desperation, and maybe even draw a penalty to make things really interesting.

Now of course that's not what happened but again, I get where he's coming from.

I would have done it too, I think

What else was he supposed to do? If it's 5 against 4, the Isles are most likely getting trapped in their own zone, and they still loose.

Might as well try to tie the game

Yes, and 5 > 4. It's still an extra player to try to get the puck.
I get it. It's a dire situation regardless. Toronto probably plays that differently if Sorokin stays in the net. The empty net allowed Toronto to play offense there.

I'd probably do the same. Nothing to lose with 42 seconds left and you're unlikely to spring a SHG while the other team is entirely focused on preventing exactly that.

the actual big brain element is the fact that they’re allowed to blindly dump the puck without worrying about icing, if you had the right team configuration you could run some creative forecheck strategies in these Hail Mary situations with no icings.

I watched the Islanders Penguins game two nights ago and he pulled the goalie with like 6 minutes to go, it almost paid off, they were down 3-0 and got within one. It's still weird to me how he manages goalie pulls though lol
