I'm pretty sure it's because you can't publicly talk about trades involving players who haven't been informed about the transaction or made official. It's why you see team officials always reply in interviews that they can't comment when directly questioned about an individual on another team.

Just out of curiosity, why do WE have to throw in the draft pick because of the leak?

I don't understand the logic behind it.

One theory could be that when Lowe found out that LA was getting Williams as part of the 3 way deal, he upped the ante for Cole, which forced Rutherford to up the ante for Williams.

Considering Rutherford had to ship a 2nd round pick with O'Sullivan for Cole (O' Sullivan alone wasn't good enough?), my guess is it was Lowe who took advantage of the leak and used it as leverage to get more out of Rutherford and consequently, DL.

Just a guess. Could be way off base.

EDIT: Primakov's theory is more plausible. It'll be interesting to find out the real story at some point once the dust settles.

Anyway, good trade for both teams; the Oilers get a young kid who has a lot of potential still (30 goals +) and the Kings get a solid 30 goal scorer.

I'm sure if Brown was traded you'd find a way to knock him as well.

People need to forget about the 2nd round pick, and if you're really upset about it, e-mail the blogger that leaked the trade which caused DL to have to add the pick into the mix. DL has 13 picks this year just for situations like this. He can move anywhere to get any player he wants.

Once you get past the pick, there is absolutely no question that a healthy Williams > a healthy O'Sullivan. He's got a broken hand. It's not like this guy is saddled with a chronic injury like a groin problem or concussions. His (long) injury list is a list of freak injuries.

DL is clearly taking a risk that the potential reward will be worth it in the long run.

As far as whether or not to be pissed off about the trade, save that emotion for when we can determine whether it was a bad trade or not, because we won't know that until Williams plays a full season with the Kings.

I'm sorry, but the "but the injuries" or "if he's healthy" stuff is nonsense. How anyone who has been a Kings fan for more than five minutes could support trading youth for injured vets. I don't care about his character. It's not all about that. It's about getting HEALTHY, TALENTED players on this team, and O'Sullivan was both.

I've never been his biggest fan either, but it's just a horrible trade all around from a value standpoint. AND we throw in a 2nd? Really? I don't care how shallow you think this draft is, it's never shallow enough to pass on having the option to select a player at an earlier time.

My first thought is why do we need to do this? This doesn't make us much better and we take on an injury risk.

Second thought is that DL holds some serious vendettas against players. Every player who challenged him financially is now gone. This is his pattern throughout his career. He better be proactive and get Jack signed or else he's gone for sure.

Lastly, I like Williams game. I'm torn. Ultimately I think we made a gamble that might backfire on us but Williams is a leader and goal scorer.

Actually, when Rich is reporting what was said at practice or in an interview, he has been a mouthpiece for the Kings all these years because he is repeating what they said verbatum. When Rich gives his own commentary, that's when his credibility is on the line. Rich has never said anything to make me doubt that he's 100% honest about what he thinks is going on (and if he can't say something he just says he can't say something). I don't think Rich's credibility has taken a hit, the image some people have of Dean being completely transparent about what he's doing has taken a hit, but not Rich's. I'm not getting down on Rich over this, he didn't make the trade, he just reported on what he was told and tried to get the truth out of the horse's mouth.

Blake is second, and Raitis/Zeiler (really what difference is there?) are third...

As soon as my mind stopped reeling from the utter shock of this move, the first thing that came to my head as a justification was size. I've been a fan of Sully's ever since he blew us all away with his defensive tenacity at the beginning of last season. However, he's a small guy; more than that, he's a small guy who doesn't play above his size and, ever since TM came to town, he's been largely ineffective on the offensive end of things. The more I think about it, the more I feel that he just doesn't really fit in with the new system and player pedigree that the organization is in the process of implementing. Williams, while his knee problems make him a risk, appears to be more of a match; on top of that, he's proven that he can be an impact scorer in the NHL, which is something POS (had to use that one more time) has yet to.

Also, I don't know if this has been mentioned, but lakings.com has interviews up with DL and TM in which they talk about the trade as well as the re-signing of O'Donnell and Ersberg.

It's too bad, I liked Patrick and wish him the best. That being said I would have been ok with this deal as a straight up swap, and it loses some of it's appeal with the pick thrown in. I'll reserve judgement until Williams has a shot to show us what he has to offer.

I love Justin Williams and I like this trade. If the leak is what caused the second rounders to be added from both sides then that's crazy. I liked Patty too, but it seems like Williams is the kind of veteran leadership that we need going forward and his injuries are not something that should have the Kings worried like Gaborik's persistent groin/hip problems.

We get the best player in the trade, and I'm hoping (as is Lombardi) that Moller can turn into a smarter player than Patty. Moller just turned twenty and Patty just turned 24. Hopefully Moller can shine with the added responsibility.

And who here think that this might mean that guys like Loktionov are closer than we think? I saw him during training camp and the kid looked really good. I know how impressed the Kings staff was with him.

Oilers and Kings fan here (thanks to the Gretzky trade). This is very difficult to assess. As I see it, the only team that lost was Carolina unless they can re-sign Cole to a decent deal.

O'Sullivan has yet to show what he can do. Williams has shown what he can do but he has torn his knee and achilles in successive seasons. If he is anywhere close to what he was early last season the Kings would win this deal.

Anyways, I am rooting for this to work out for both teams and I really think that it will.

It means to me that we are much further from letting players like him in the lineup. Which is the way I thought it would be.

Williams is signed for just two more seasons. He's a UFA when done with his deal. If anyone thinks we are not going to try really hard to get in the playoffs next season, they just aren't thinking. This team is going to make moves. What I like most about this trade (and I don't like much) is that those of us who think this team has holes...are being showed something, and that is that DL will try to fill them.

RH, I answered that in the second half of my post where I quote the article.

If what I'm reading there is correct, Rich Hammond goofed (leaking information) which caused the original trade to blow up between the Hurricanes and Kings. Lombardi had to then throw a 2nd round pick into the deal to get Carolina back to the negotiation table.

Well, I'm still unsure as to why we had to throw in the pick and not carolina but at least I feel better now that I know DL didn't go crazy overpaying for Williams.
