30-35 is more realistic over a healthy season.

He has always been coming back from injuries and still managing point per game almost. People don't return at full capacity, it takes games to get back to it. He's suffered from broken seasons, where he has come back from injury so many times. Obviously doesn't do as great on first games after injury as he would if it was just another game while healthy and in game shape.

82 game Laine at 19 scored 44 goals in a second line role with a center that you would not qualify for your teams 3rd line. His ceiling is far north from that 44 when paired with actual top tier talent as himself.

It's a huge loss for hockey in general. This is starting to remind me of Eric Lindros situation.

Any Leafs fan mad at Xhekaj should ask themselves how they felt about Corry Perry having to answer the bell after Tavares bounced his face off Perry's knee. If you thought Perry should have to fight when he was completely innocent, then you better admit that Pare owes the same debt after sticking his knee out on Laine. Xhekaj took it easy on him, because he realized what a cowardly piece of trash he was dealing with.

Most thought it was dumb and unneeded but understood it.

Is that why the fight against Cooke in the first period of what turned out to be his final game was the first of his NHL career? You'd think if he was such a dirty player back in 2004, as you claim, someone would have taken offense to it long before the Canucks waited almost a month to fight him in the 2nd game they played against the Avs after his hit on Naslund (which, for the record, was unpenalized, deemed legal upon review by the league, and called clean by Naslund). You'd also think that someone throwing a lot of questionable hits, as you claim, would result in more than 32 PIMs over the 56 games he played prior to the Canucks finally taking him to task.

My ultimate thought about the whole thing is that the NHL needs to limit preseason significantly. There’s no need for games like this where the full lineup of one team goes against mostly AHLers, that’s what happened here. Have a couple games for the prospects and then a game to end it with the full lineup by both teams. Season should start October 1st anyway.

Really tough to watch Laine hurt like that. Hoping for the best scenario possible and for him to recover well both physically and mentally.

As of Pare, whether it was clean or not, it was knee on knee leading to a potential long term injury for a key player for the Habs. I don't think it was intentional nor malicious, but it happened.

As for Arber, he did what his team needed and stood up for his teammate. However, there is defintiely a better way than attacking Pare from behind. I don't agree how he took on Pare.

Definitely not purposeful. Laine needs to skate straight. He’s going east-west and trying to cross the blue line. The other club has four across. Passing back or dumping in. He’s going to get whacked doing what he did. It wasn’t dirty. It was a consequence of the circumstances. Laine dumps that puck and it’s all okay.

Yeah I dunno the whole sequence was unfortunate but Xhekaj’s response definitely a little extreme on the escalatory ladder.

Laine’s knee injury is a devastating hockey injury and no one wants to see that. Hopefully he’s back sooner than later… but a rabbit punch from behind and piling on a la Bertuzzi on Moore has the potential for life altering damage. No one wants to see that.

I just don’t see any intent in that replay. Pare didn’t just throw out his knee, he turned to try and make contact across Laine’s torso as he cut to the middle. That necessarily means turning his leg to shift his body weight into the attempted hit. This looked nothing like actual kneeing majors where a player is beaten and tries to clip his opponent with a knee as a last resort.

Could it be called a kneeing penalty as a matter of punishing the result… maybe. The rulebook gives the referee a lot of latitude to make a call based on the “severity of the infraction”. If I’m the ref here, I’m seeing a really unfortunate collision with no intent and no flagrant kneeing motion. But I could see a ref calling it a minor. It wouldn’t be more than a minor because the lack of intent is pretty obvious.

In any event, this sucks for Laine and for the league. This was one of the big stories to watch coming out of this preseason and it looks like a truly awful injury. Hoping that against all odds it turns out to be a short term thing.

Yeah agreed. Xhekaj was correct to engage in Pare as a response from a hockey code perspective but how it was done was definitely a little on the dangerous side. But fortunately didn’t result in anything that all parties might regret.

For Pare, who is also a center man in a defensive position and more or less stationary as Laine was cutting in, it looked like he was shifting to meet Laine, with the instinct to get any piece of him. That doesn’t look like when a player is coasting in with the knee out, with forearm braced. That’s usually the body positioning for an intentional knee on knee.

Not sure many people are defending Pare, I think Laine is partially to blame, but think it is more of a hockey play gone wrong.

Borderline NHLer jumping an AHLer also isn't a huge deal, I just think it was the dirtier of the two plays and should likely be a suspension.

Xhekaj is one of the most overrated tough guys...
