Very odd sequence of events in Saratoga 5.

The 4 broke through the gate prematurely and wiped out the 2 while the 3 pulled up and was eventually declared a non-starter. The 4 was DQ'd and listed as "unplaced."The 3 and 4 were chalky.

Those alive in Pick 4s and Pick 5s with the 3 got the 4 as the post-time favorite. The winner? Number 6 at 44-to-1.

Did Johnny V. hit the way back machine? He repeated yesterday's marvelous finish in today's Saratoga 6 on a 14-to-1 shot. Perfectly timed.

The Whitney, next week's marquee race, is loaded. The race will be revealed today. Todd Pletcher could have as many as three in the race.

  • Top three riders in money earnings this year are Irad Ortiz, Jr., Flavien Prat and Tyler Gaffalione with the top two separated by a mere $500,000 (appx). Prat is my pick for Eclipse winner this year.
Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $19.1 million.
  • Flavien Prat had a 3-win day. He has now overtaken Irad Ortiz, Jr. for the leader at the meet with 19 victories.
  • Race 5: A 44-to-1 shot won after chaos at the starting gate in which the 4 broke through the gate early and was DQ'd while the 3 was unplaced and declared a non-starter.
  • Race 6: Reining Flowers (John Velazquez/John Ortiz) won from back of the pack at 14-to-1 in a perfectly timed finish. The horse entered off two lifetime races and both at Horseshoe Indiana, his home state.
  • Race 8: Souper Quest (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Mark Casse) seemed like a steal at 3-to-1. The 4-year-old has rarely been in a position at any interval other than first or second in eight career races.
  • Race 9: Silver Knott (Flavien Prat/Charlie Appleby), bred in Great Britain, won the Grade 2 $250,000 Bowling Green Stakes in record-setting time. Silver Knott timed the 1 3/8 miles on turf in 2:11.03. The win, a third straight victory, put the horse over $1,000,000 in career earnings with six wins in 15 starts. Soldier Rising (Jose Ortiz/Christophe Clement), another career millionaire in earnings, placed for the sixth time in his past seven starts and 11 of his 22 career starts.
  • Race 10: The $1 Pick 6 was a gigantic $212,000+.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Card: Four of the ten races were stakes.
  • Ned Allard won two stakes. The trainer began his career in the 1960s in New England. Jaime Rodriguez won both mounts.
  • Race 11: When Maryland finishes broadcasts, oftentimes a track from South America will be presented. The first of those today was from Uruguay, officially 11 as a sequence to Laurel's 10 races and with it a field of 18 reduced to 14. The $2 exacta paid over $1,800 and a $2 tri returned more than $9,500.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 6: Bridle a Butterfly (Drayden Van Dyke/Bethany Baumgardner) gave elevated-via-DQ Kentucky Derby winner Country House his first winner as a sire and according to Pedigree Query his first starter to hit the track. It was also the second career win for the trainer who hails from Maryland and was once an assistant to Thomas Proctor. Country House paid $132.40 in one of the most stunning decisions in Ky. Derby history after Maximum Security was DQ'd from the victory.
  • Drayden Van Dyke is winning at a 27% clip, the highest of the 28 jockeys with at least two wins this meet. Van Dyke has 22 wins on 81 mounts. He moved to south Florida from southern Cal a few weeks ago.
Del Mar (California):
  • Handle: Roughly $19 million.
  • Bob Baffert had a less than impressive week going 10 1-3-3 which included 4 0-2-1 in MSW and 4 0-1-1 in graded stakes. He was 2 1-0-1 in AOC races.
  • Race 9: Johannes (Umberto Rispoli/Tim Yakteen) won the Grade 2 $250,000 Eddie Read Stakes. Shortest and longest on the board comprised the exacta: the MOAB at 76-to-1 placed.

Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 8: Patches O'Houlihan (Sofia Vives/Robert Tiller) won the $100,000 Pink Lloyd Stakes as the trainer was the conditioner of the former Canadian Horse of the Year and a sparkling 38 29-3-2 record. Patches is 10 8-0-0 lifetime and won today in his 2024 debut. Following the race, trainer Tiller stated "He's a horse that will not work good" meaning he saves his best for the race. Vives, from South Carolina via Florida, is making a name for herself.

i'm not sure about jv and the going back in time machine-he's been riding like this even before jerry bailey retired. over 25 years.

you and i were basically on the same page the moment he won with that turf chalk horse for graham motion. that race along with the longshot today would be excellent examples as to why jv imho has been the best american rider and top 5 world rider since bailey. the timing, fluidity, decision making, and effective finishes.

past performance comment on ap indy's belmont win-perfect handling. this should be posted on most of jv's past winning performances. when he retires many will miss him.

For it to happen on consecutive days and one with a 14-to-1 shot in which the Hall of Famer can pick-and-choose his limited mounts these days stood out to me. Not many have his internal clock which was always his strength in my opinion but in any even magnificent riding and as is often said "you have to have the horse"; nonetheless, visually impressive. Depending on his interests, he would do well as an agent following his riding days, especially with the less experienced.

"you have to have the horse"; but you also need a rider that won't "butcher it" as well.

if i owned horses there are 4 riders in the last 25 years that i can wholeheartedly trust and not lose a minute of sleep over a possible bad ride: bailey, johnny v, jorge chavez, and david flores. maybe 5-prat is real good.

johnny v has gotten to the point of being real selective with his mounts the way craig perret was during the early 90's. and as well he should-he's more than earned that right. he seems to be picking horses to ride that are of good quality, and are trained and owned by outfits that also appear to stress the safety and well being of their animals. jv lost a spleen years back.

I had a fiver on the nose. I like the trainer and Johnny V in the irons never hurts.
that ortiz trainer i've been noticing since the churchill meet. that guy trains his horses to explode during stretch runs. on paper those horses don't seem to appear that they can run like that.

^ Kevin Cox, who bills himself as the Brooklyn Cowboy and someone who specializes at Saratoga, had this analysis prior to the race regarding the trainer John Ortiz.

And now NYRA and CDI are in a contract dispute. Thus all NYRA content will not be permitted at Churchill owned properties, including simulcast, and vice versa. If understood correctly, Saratoga cannot be watched or bet at CD, Fair Grounds, etc.
