Blues are collecting quite the retirement community with the term on a lot of these deals, but couldn't really let him walk. So long as as his back doesn't become a major issue he should be worth $6.5 AAV for at least the first half of that contract.

It’s 8 years beyond this year. 9 more years of Parayko sounds great to me. I hope his back is healed and it’s not a chronic thing that will hinder him forever.

I feel like the value in theory is pretty good, but that value is dependent on a lot of factors. How recovered is he from his back issue? How does his game get impacted when he starts to lose his speed, because 6’6 defensemen tend to lose that element pretty quickly. It’s unlikely he ever figures out his offensive game to be highly productive there, so the obvious comp is someone like Vlasic, and that fell of a crater fast.

Basically, if Army is convinced our window is open (which he 100% is) he basically had to make this signing. But this could become an albatross, fast.

This sums up my feelings quite well. As long as his back is healed, this is good value in the short to medium term. Years 6-8 are the ones that could be ugly. But it’s par for the course right now for our defense

The term is longer than you would like, but that is the cost of business to get a manageable AAV for a pending UFA. This is my favorite contract out of the 5 Blues players whose AAV start with a 6. Given the absurd money given out to D in the last few months, this looks great.

Edit: No way this contract was given out if the Blues weren't certain about his back getting back to 100% in the short term. You can't rule out long term issues, but there is no way we invest $52M if the medical staff saw data to suggest he may not return to full range of motion/strength.

Ok awesome. At first when I saw 8 years I was like “oh man this is a risk” but when it’s for only 6.5M, you really can’t complain. That’s a great price.

I can’t believe some of the d-men that are getting 9 mil +. Darnell Nurse at 9.25 is going to be one of the worst contracts in NHL history.

I was mainly making a joke because of the 6.5Mil cap hit. But a top four of Parayko-Lindholm-Faulk-Krug or Parayko-Fowler-Faulk-Krug would both be very good and manageable cap-wise longterm. Especially if they could get some decent defensively sound 3rd pairing d-man (cough-Mayfield-cough)

I’m happy with 6.5. Obviously 5-6 years would’ve been preferable, but that would’ve been over 7 AAV I would imagine. You can always make a move if he becomes a total liability. There’s always a team willing to take on bad contracts for a moderate return, and I doubt it will ever really get to that stage.

Great signing, all you have to do is look at this list to see how much value we are getting with Colt locked up at 6.5 mil. Why isn’t Nurse on there? Any contract that takes a player past 35 carries risk. I’ll take it, and I’m glad Colt will retire a Blue.

Any word on NTC? I know there no way there is a NMC.

For sure. I just wonder if his back problems had never occured, would he be signing this extension right now or more tempted to become UFA? Guess we'll never know the answer to that, but Parayko gets some nice long-term security by signing now and the Blues get a key piece locked down long term. Then again, it sounds like he really wants to stay in St. Louis and he would likely know that it could have turned into another Petro situation if it had dragged through the season. Army would have been forced to make a tough decision at the trade deadline rather than risk losing him for nothing.

So even though it was kind of a surprise to me, it makes sense for both sides to just sign the deal now and put it behind them.

Still waiting to see, but I expect there will be the Army standard full-to-partial NTC. According to the figures that Strickland tweeted out, it sounds like no SB money in the deal.
