Post-Game Talk: Panthers play like it's 2004 and waste great goaltending against old southeast rivals, lose 4-1 to Caps

Worst 7 game stretch for the Panthers since they went 0-5-2 from January 3 to January 15, 2019. Ironically, the skid was snapped with a 3-1 win over the Leafs in Florida.

holy shit. take a deep breath.

the team is playing like dog shit, right now, no doubt. i mean, there were missed assignments 4v4, 5v5 and in every area of the ice.

rush chances were 5-1 caps going into the 2nd. that's shocking. that's not a recognizable game.

we're missing the net a lot, though those shots/goals would mask some of the other issues so maybe it's better that it get ugly.

i'm not worried bigger picture, though. we got a couple of bounces a few games ago and dismantled a top team. we've played pretty well for the first 1/4 of the season overall. i don't think a massive hole has opened up in our roster overnight. not that i'm saying i'm convinced this is a contender, mind you.

We miss Montour and OEL.

For whatever reason Kulikov, Balinksis, and Schmidt's play have all dropped off. These guys are playing one pairing too high. Nosek isn't fast enough to help out the defense with break outs / back check. He is pretty f***ing useless. Pucks aren't getting out of our zone quickly and cleanly enough to sustain speed through the NZ and forecheck effectively.

I don't think we can acquire a dman for cheap that will fill a 2nd pairing role.

A better idea might be to acquire a winger that can play with Barkov and Reinhart. Someone like Nils Hoglander. This will drop Rodrigues or CV down to line 3, which will create a better environment for our D. You could optionally run Eetu as the 4th line C as well.

OEL was amazing value last year that we just straight up won’t find again :/

I don’t know about you guys but Chychrun is looking real appetizing as a UFA

Would be nice to offload the Bob contract in 2025. Nothing against the guy, but that 10mil, or even a portion-if a buyout, would do a lot to restock talent on the team as the lack of NHL ready prospects is hurting.

I would take Chyrch as long as he buys into not taking the top dollar to play here.

I am not concerned at all. Hard to feel panic after winning a Stanley Cup.

Regardless, the boys are indeed playing like ass and I think we can all agree it stems from the blue line. Our bottom-6 has been relatively solid and our top-6 remains unchanged for the most part.

It's clear Schmidt, Boqvist and Balinskis are huge downgrades from Montour and OEL. It's a pretty monumental drop off if you ask me. Neither of these guys fill that puck moving role that both Monty and OEL served.

No idea how they're replaced but I do think Jiricek might be a good move for us. He's young, impressionable and clearly has a pedigree of talent. This isn't exactly a "reclamation project" ala Boqvist (who I will eat a massive plate of crow on because he's been awful).

Regardless, some change is probably needed. Not all of these guys are up to snuff and it's forcing Kulikov to be in positions where he struggles to succeed. Also results in asking too much of Mikkola.

Whenever you have a situation where Ekblad looks decent and possibly not the slowest D out there, you know you’re f***ed.

If Bob doesn’t have a great year I could see him going next year. Will always love the guy for what he did but Father Time comes for everyone.
