I’ve said it before….He didn’t grow up in hockey culture and I think that hurts him. .

A lack of desire is what hurts him, he got what he wanted out of hockey, the biggest paycheque.

I think he’s finding it harder and harder to just flip a switch because teams realize they can just use the playoff game play on him and take away his space, push him out of a game fairly easily. He doesn’t put his weight on anyone so it’s not even that taxing to contain him. He’s a sluggish skater so you just clog it up and discourage him from carrying the puck, catch him making a soft play to a teammate and get yourself a turnover. This version of Matthews is a complete non factor.

What alarmed me last year, the key games he didn't seem to want the puck on his stick. Was dishing it off when he didn't have to, didn't show any "I got this boys" mentality, was content to defer and wait for something to happen. Amazing talent, mediocre motor.
