I’m sure he’s a fine backup. But it seems like a waste of cap space when we could’ve gotten a forward to fill that space we just acquired. Especially since we already have a backup.

With Stonehandes projected for the 4th line (or 3rd with Luo/Lundy), I'm not sure Zito really wants to go for a big-ticket forward...

More a Okposo or something... And being a facilitator for others to pick up free assets on the way IMO.

I’ve never liked him, but it should be fine to close out this season. He’s a pending UFA so it just gives a little more security over just having driedger. I had no realistic hopes for Giles, just a replacement level minor league tweener imo so that’s fine with me. At least we didn’t give up a pick. We don’t have many left so we still have them if we want to pursue a bottom-6 forward

I think Giles showed some potential to be a good forechecker on the 4th line but not much else. Zito can find more of these late bloomers that didn't originally get drafted.

Giles is 25 and doesn't add much to this team now or in the future.

I don't care for Vanecek but he's essentially Plan C.

I imagine Vanecek is going down to the AHL and is a feasible option behind Driedger in the situation that Bob gets hurt. Or he gets the playing time and Driedger goes back down to the AHL.

Maybe the coaches have been seeing something in Driedger they REALLY don't like. His numbers have been abysmal in the AHL this season but in all honesty I haven't seen him play. The giant cap hit on Vanecek and nothing being retained is really interesting. There must've been a cheaper goalie (financially) available somewhere, right?

In terms of UFA goalies on sellers there isn't much; Georgiev, Reimer, Sharek. Utah has Vejmelka, but they are a bubble team. It's very slim picking.

GR says Driedger is going back down. Again, this is a guy who will be starting 6-8 games as a Panther and opening bench doors during the playoffs. Doesn't matter. If Florida extends him' I'll be annoyed, he's not good.
