I know the Leafs need D but I also think we need some more "young vets" to play with the rooks and our forward group could use some more reliable players. Palat seems like the perfect player to compliment Matthews and Nylander since he's a solid defensive player and has proven he can hold his own with speedy high end forwards. Tampa has some obvious cap challenges and even though Yzerman has been masterful in dealing with his RFAs I can't see him being able to sign another 4.5+mil long term contract to Johnson and Palat. What would TBay be looking for in return?

I think we've done this one. Too expensive for T.O. to really consider. This is the coach's favorite player. Not an easy guy to move.

Could we interest you in a rejuvenated Filppula?

Palat is too valuable to the team, it would take a vast over payment that you wouldn't want to pay, and I believe if anyones going to be moved it'd be Johnson with the emergence of Point, or we'll trade/buy out Filp

oh no, not again.

Nylander + was the ask last time:laugh:

What else do you have that would make us a better team?

It's not about whether or not Nylander is better than Palat. But there's no reason for us to trade him while we're hoping to make a run for the cup unless we know for sure we're gonna win the trade. T.O. just doesn't have any of our missing pieces, and trading Palat would create far too big a hole in our lineup.

Uh oh... OK never mind lol I'm assuming that Lightening fans have resigned themselves to losing either Johnson or Palat so the whole proposal is based on that. If its going to take an obvious overpayment then its a moot point.

What would that be? You've got a pretty deep team

Our cap crunch is next year. We can't be throwing key contributors overboard a year beforehand while we're trying to win a cup.

Fair enough... I was thinking off season as much as right now. This year is a wait and see for the Leafs so I'm good with that but long term they need some players to compliment the youth and Palat is a guy I'd want moving forward

Hard to judge who we'll have to lose just yet. Palat's value is pretty huge for us though.

My guess is we're going to try to move both Filppula and Callahan after the expansion draft. Filppula has looked seriously good this year, and he would probably be a good option for Toronto. Wouldn't cost much, his contract will be up at the end of next year, and when he was brought to TB, Yzerman said it was to lead by example, which is something he could still do in Toronto, or with any young team.

Unless he has a horrific season, I don't see Ondrej Palat being a cap casualty, regardless. He's just probably not a realistic trade target right now, which is why this thread is bound to fill up with proposals for Nylander and Reilly. We just don't have a reason to move Palat unless we're getting an overpayment.

Especially since it's very easy for TB to offer their QO to both Johnson and Palat and then trade the chosen tribute to the highest bidder.

yeah this thread in general is a bad idea. toronto doesnt really need wingers with JVR,Nylander,Marner,Komarov,Brown,Soshnikov,Hyman and Martin in the NHL and Leipsic,Kapanen,Rychel,Timashov etc in the system.

Callahan likely isnt gonna be moved unless Tampa wants to give away an elite prospect or 1st rd pick. 4 years left at nearly 6m with minimal production... he is basically clarkson 2.0.

filpulla could probably be moved if the bolts just decided to take on a bad contract with 1 year remaining without a NMC. I dont see Toronto being a fit unless they move Bozak for picks/prospects.

Just a thought. what would the expected return for johnson be if the leafs decided to eat callahans contract?
they definitely have the space (20+mil off the books, only zaitsev as a notable to resign). It would allow
Tampa to not lose Palat, or Bishop, and give Drouin a raise in the future

Leafs don't need him and he will cost assets we don't currently want to give up.

If you're trading Johnson, would Backlund + another valuable piece be considerable? Then we can trade Bennett for a 3rd line center and a 4D on a great contract.

That would depend on the price for Flippy

There is zero chance Filpulla is traded to Toronto. It's well known that Babcock and Filpulla can't stand each other and that Babcock is the reason Filpulla left Detroit.

Toronto is doing just fine developing through the draft.

Teams (e.g. Tampa in this case) always have other alternatives. As mentioned by others, they could move Filppula (or Callahan) even if meant taking back salary or throwing an additional asset into the package.

Palat is 100% not needed in Toronto at this time.

Zero interest in going after another forward for this team.
