The Ducks could really use a faceoff specialist, especially a righty. Pageau’s contract is rich for what he provides, but the Ducks have plenty of space to absorb that deal for this year and next.

I know the Islanders are in a tough spot right now with their recent play and injuries, so I want to ask 1) could Pageau be on the block? 2) if he is on the block, would the Islanders be looking for immediate help or would they prefer to just clear his money?

If NYI wants to help the team right now, the Ducks could offer Fowler or maybe Killorn (Anaheim can also take back someone else like Reilly or Wahlstrom to help make the money work). If you want Fowler, I’d ask for some kind of add to Pageau, but nothing crazy.

Another layer of this is that Pageau, Fowler, and Killorn all have pretty strong trade protection, so let’s just assume that isn’t a problem for the sake of discussion.

Contracts:

Pageau - 1 year after this year at $5M AAV w/ 16 team no trade list

Fowler - 1 year after this year at $6.5M AAV w/ 4 team trade list

Killorn - 2 years after this year at $6.25M AAV w/ full no trade clause (becomes 16 team no trade list next year)

Isles would want no part of Killorn, he's 35 and 2 years left at a higher number than Pageau. Not sure about Fowler when we have no salary cap left. We need scoring help...A winger, not named Killorn

Fowler for Pageau + Reilly + would almost be a cap neutral trade. There can be some tinkering to that. The Ducks very well could trade Vatrano or Fabbri at some point, but probably not at this stage in the season (probably not Killorn either to be honest).

I think moving Pageau for cap space is the move, none of those names interest me at all. I think a 4th should do it with no retention.

Our offense is probably worse than yours, so I'm not sure we can help there

Ducks really have 3 guys that can drive offense (Carlsson, Zegras, Terry) but no one that can really finish right now. Vatrano is streaky and will get going sooner or later, hopefully the same for McTavish. Gauthier looks like he's almost there. He's probably been 3 inches away from scoring 3 or 4 goals.

Out of those, Vatrano is probably the only one that might be available. But I don't think Verbeek would move him just to improve faceoffs. I doubt Fowler and Killorn waive either, they probably only would for a contender.

Pageau also has a MNTC for around half the league. So, assuming it's all 7 CAD teams plus the worst situations for the other 9 that he has.
Though, NYI could also waive him and he could get picked up that way as well. If the end goal is to free up cap space for no return, ala Goodrow. But, that could very well be for the 25/26 season.

Sad to say, the way Casey and MacLean are playing. I can't move Pageau unless it makes sense. He's playing well and I don't like Casey or MacLean as our 3rd line center. So a 4th doesn't do it for me right now

Nah, I'm sure JG would love to come back to the Ottawa area, he played most of junior here too after all

Yeah, I think that's one place he would have no issues with. But I don't see a match. Not looking for a 4th-5th. need youngsters.

Desperate for young bodies to play now with all our injuries.

Ya, there was talk in the off season that he would be a nice add, but def not at 5mil, 50% retention is just kind of assumed if Lou actually wants to move him. Maybe come TDL, depending on how Ottawa sits then

Well to move him atm with no retention, Lou would need to add a 2nd at least, cause no one is looking for a small 5mil bottom 6 C to be fair. As much as I love him, it's mostly nostalgia, he was never worth 5 mil though

Pageau's real money is $4 mill this season and $3.5 mill next season. So, if your team isn't close to the cap ceiling, that's probably what you're more focused on.

Isles have a lot of injuries at the moment. So, if they fall out of it because of it, see if they do look to move him. Waiving him does becomes an option just to see if you can unload him for nothing as some of the weaker clubs know that it's hard to get vets to go there without paying more or giving out more term.

Agreed for the most part, but still, the NHL has proven in the past, no one with a hit like that and numbers like his is getting picked up on waivers, the money makes him a negative asset in season, especially with only 6 teams being able to fit him in atm

If they have to hold onto him to the end of the season, so be it. If they miss the PO this season, probably have to make changes and reboot the roster, especially with Palmeri, Nelson due up and JGP and Lee due up in 2026. That's $23 mill in cap space. Probably could look to do a Goodrow type move and waive JGP if they can't find a trade option, after the season.

That Goodrow move was shocking and not the norm at all, don't expect a repeat of a weird outlier situation like that. I think, and many others do too, that the game has passed Lou by at this point, Toronto certainly realized it and that insane Engvall contract was decent proof. I think Lou should go enjoy retirement, he's 82 ffs, enough is enough
