im not against 2 year contract, but it has to be at least 4m. what if subban gets injured badly in the next 2 years? he has to have some kind of security, and he certainly deserved at least 4m per season.

Well if Pk hasnt budged from wanting a 6 yr contract why even move on the dollar amount? They need to agree on lenght and then move to money. I also think those numbers are way too low but seems like a negotiating position

Well, I was encouraged that Bergevin was going to break the cycle of terrible GMs, but it turns out he's an idiot just like the others.

Lol the sky is falling so hard on HFBoards Habs fans!!!

The sky is falling!!!

The sky is falling!!!

Once Subban's gets signed, I can't WAIT to see what the next great drama is.

It will be that Subban is only inked to a 2 years deal. Which is stupid because he wants to sign long term...

Perhaps the offer mentioned is the initial one made by MB. They had a meeting Friday and its possible that for the first time PK said he would consider a two year deal and he has the weekend to make a counter offer. I doubt the Habs think PK is only worth 5M over two years.

As much as I was against giving him a Doughty type contract, this offer is ridiculous (assuming that it is a real one).

Anyway, it's still not panic time. I'm assuming that a guy like Meehan, being paid the kind of money he is making, has a plan. After seeing that the habs did good with Markov and Price playing great so they wouldn't ear PK chants in the Bell Center, they probably leaked the offer info to get some public sympathy...

What we don't know is if they actually negotiated that offer, meaning that it might still be that low because PK never came back with a counter offer on a 2 yrs deal, but only spoke about 5-6 yrs deals.

I'm guessing it will either end up with a 2 yrs deal around 4M per, or Bergevin will ask a good friend to make an offer sheet that he will match on a longer deal, so he will have been "forced" to give PK the bigger contract.

This Subban situation is exactly why I have no faith in humanity. How can people be so stupid? Yet somehow manage to become GMs of the Canadiens?

I think what's more shocking to me, if you take what Lavoie is reporting as truth, is that the Habs haven't moved off their initial offer which they gave Subban in May.

Even the staunch 'bridge deal' supporters must admit that's a bit extreme, no?

I wonder if MB will take this hardline approach with all our players going forward...

I would have signed him long term as I said I think in part 6 of this messy thread.. but I can understand the habs thinking in wanting a bridge deal to be honest, what I can't understand is 2.5 million per year.

Out of all the bridge deals signed lately by the Habs, Price was the lowest at 2.75, Patches, Gorges, Pleks all signed around 3.1 - 3.3 million if I remember correctly. I don't get why 2.5 for PK.

it can be negotiating position in june or july, but if that's the negotiating position three games into the season we might have a problem. a big one.

i was talking about season before he signed the contract. he wasn't our #1 goalie in 09/10 season.

when he signed the contract he was the #1 goaltender and he knew it.

Price was the undisputed #1 goaltender at the time he signed a 2 year bridge.

All I am saying is that the rumoured offer to Subban is in line with that, so the words "disgusting" and "joke" don't apply.

I am not saying he will or should sign, but he's rumoured to have been offered a competitive contract.

I asked Don Meehan whether he knew if Flyers/Montreal had talked trade on PK Subban: "I really don't [know]," he said. MTL wants to sign PK

It's quite funny, isn't it. Every time we get a new GM, we have a lot of hope that the new GM will bring the Habs to the promise land. The common thing is that each GM bring with him different stupidity.

About Bridge contracts.

First of all they were put in place for our franchise by Gauthier and Gainey. Nothing against those two, but I don't get why Bergevin is sticking to the concept.

I would say it cost us more in the case of a few players (Gorges, Plek, Price) and only worked out for Pacioretty.

Seems to me like it's a sketchy philosophy at best, that a lot of teams around the league do not believe in at all.

Yeah, I think he'll do just fine, and won't have to resort to betraying his young star client.

LOL I know he has many other clients I am talking specificaly to PK he doesn't sign then he makes no money from THAT client. He makes more from his other clients so why not tell PK to take the deal get his pay day and make even more money on his next deal simple business really. A bird in the hand and all that.

Not saying #Canadiens should overspend to re-sign Subban, but their offer (2 years, $5.1 million) is insultingly low.

so Bergevin is offering PK 1 million more than Bouillon? Pathetic and completely understandable that he won't sign.

having said that, I don't see a trade happening, not only because I really don't want one to but I think PK wants to stay...let's hope

Marc Bergevin, the "great talent evaluator", will trade Subban and probably throw in Eller too. Bet he does it for a 3rd liner too.

You're trying to make sense out of something that does not make sense. A bridge deal for Subban is dumb to begin with so..

It's like arguing why someone would kill wild game with 2 grenades instead of only one. When the real question is why use a grenade at all ?

I repeat, it would make absolutely no sense to betray a client for a quick buck, especially since Meehan doesn't need it.

Simple business really. If he betrays his clients now, he loses them next contract.

To be fair he did sign Pacioretty to a great long term deal and locked Price as well. I'll wait to see how the whole Subban saga turns out before passing a final judgement on the situation.

Right now i certainly do question the lowball and bridge contract strategy though. He's playing with fire.
