Crazy how underrated Forsberg is. There's still so many people who don't understand how high he would be on the all-time list if he played 1200 NHL games instead

Most of his career was in the dead puck era and he still has some crazy numbers. If he was just elite offensively, maybe people would have a point but he's probably the most complete player I have ever seen, a force of nature, just as good in any facet of the game. This guy would most likely be seen as a top-10 guy if he didn't have to deal with so many injuries

From 1995-96 to 2005-06 (which is pretty much the whole DPE minus 2005-06), Forsberg had the 3rd best PPG (1.29 PPG) behind only Mario Lemieux (1.62 PPG) and Jagr (1.39 PPG). Mario only played 316 games though and those 2 guys are Top-3 and Top-10 players of all-time.

He had an higher PPG than Sakic, Gretzky, Lindros, Kariya, Palffy, Bure, etc

I liked Datsyuk much, much more but Forsberg was clearly better.
Was he ?

Datsyuk was a top 5 offensive player in the league while being the best defensive forward in the game by a country mile. Ahead of Bergeron at that time, Bergy was still young but Datsyuk was the top dog.

I don't think Forsberg was better overall

Peak Datsyuk finished 4th overall in scoring, just 9 points behind prime Malkin while being the greatest defensive forward on the planet by a mile.

He had hands like Kane
Playmaking like Crosby
Defensive skills like Bergeron

That's a hell of a player.

If I overrated Datsyuk like you did then yeah, he'd be better than Forsberg. If they were in the same league Forsberg would outscore Datsyuk and while Datsyuk would be somewhat better defensively, he was overrated defensively (Zetterberg was better for instance) and the gap would not be massive. Most importantly when the playoffs came around Forsberg, consistently excellent, would clearly separate himself from Datsyuk, often disappointing.
