Forsberg was better.

Datsyuk did better in Selke voting (not sure he was actually that much better defensively) and better at nifty dangles and stealing pucks. Forsberg was a better passer and playmaker, harder to knock off the puck (though Datsyuk was strong on the puck himself), more physical and significantly better in the playoffs.

In a 2012 poll of 257 NHL players, Datsyuk was voted #1 in hardest to get off the puck. He also won smartest player, most difficult to play against, cleanest to play against, and toughest forward to play against along with being named toughest to stop by the goalies. His largest margin of victory was the hardest to get off the puck category, where he received 47% of the vote to Malkins 10%. Datsyuk is a rare case of a flashy player generally being rated higher by his peers than by fans.

I think it's fair to say Forsberg is at least a tier above Datsyuk offensively. But how much of a defensive gap do you think there is between Datsyuk and Forsberg? (With Datsyuk having the obvious edge ofc)

True. He’s criminally underrated on hf I believe. Those that think he isn’t comparable to Fedorov are mistaken, he was right up there with the best when healthy in his career. That said, no doubt in my mind Forsberg was the better player.

forsberg was easily the better player. the only thing that gives me pause is 'based on their career'. forsberg had a much shorter career than datsyuk so i could see that being a factor.

Forsberg takes it. For datsyuk, outside his 4-5 peak seasons right after the lockout there’s not a lot of meat on his career, and he only showed up for about half of his playoff appearances over his career.

His career was always going to get underrated as time passes due to the following reasons:

-low scoring era
-hit his peak late and early on played behind a stacked team of hall of famers
-two-way beast who didn’t score a lot of goals
-inconsistent offensive production in the playoffs

Based on actual ability, and impact on the game when healthy, he was top tier for atleast a decade if not more. He also showed more than enough dominance in the playoffs if you watched consistently, even when he wasn’t scoring a lot he was usually winning his matchups playing elite defensively.

My two favorite forwards of all the time, I think that will be a close poll. Who you rather have based on their career?

If Datsyuk is one of your favorite players and you want to pick him because you like him more, that's cool. You should be able to pick based on your favorites.

But if you're picking based on who was better - in any of ability, peak, prime, playoffs, international or career - it's unquestionably Forsberg. Definitely a higher caliber of player.
