Owen Sound Attack 2024-25 Season Thread, Part II

I think there's a couple counter points to that. One being that he'd need to graduate high school which most won't accomplish until the conclusion of their 17 year old season. Secondly, he lacks physical maturity that would likely be required to play in a bigger/older league against men in the NCAA.

I get those NCAA programs will chase talents, and Mbuyi certainly is one of those that teams will chase, but I think he's going to have to really work on adding weight before he's ready for that step up.

I suspect Owen Sound's competitive window factors into those plans as well. They should be ready to contend in the 26/27 season which I would think players will want to be a part of.
100% agree. Which is why I stated (and also what I heard) that there is 0 indication as to him leaving for next season, just that those two programs in particular have a keen interest in the player joining at some point in the future. I would assume he doesn’t make any concrete decision until he gets drafted by an NHL team this time next year. Those two schools were interested in him throughout u16 AAA as well from what I know. Funny enough, (because I checked for myself just now) if you go look at Pierce’s Instagram, both the Penn State and BC men’s hockey team profiles are amongst those who he follows. I couldn’t remember my log in information but I was the first person (to my knowledge) that mentioned Mason Roy committing to the team on here and on Twitter last season + the addition of Lenny Greenberg. I promise I’m not spreading misinformation! I just hear these things from people who are a lot smarter / more well informed than myself and share what I can! These are rumours of course, I am most certainly NOT an ‘insider’. Just a die hard fan with some friends who work in and around the league.

I hate to scare anyone but I’ve also heard of 2 NCAA programs with a keen interest in Pierce Mbuyi. Not saying anything is official or that he would leave this summer as I don’t think that’s the case, but sharks are circling … 2 BIG sharks in particular.

(Boston College, Penn State)

Don’t shoot the messenger lol.

they would be all over him, he probably will commit for 27-28 like wasslyn just did, up to the attack to keep him for his 4th year.

2026/27 I would assume is shaping up to be their “go for it” year. I’d assume they keep him and just lose him for nothing like how the top 19 year olds usually go out

Geez talk about getting punished for good drafting. I would hope for his sake it’s not until 26-27
If it’s 2026/27 wonder who he gets traded to this year along with George. No way should the attack be going all in 1 year after rebuilding

The people who told me about this coming down the pipeline earlier in the week / who initially shared this Information are saying he’s expected to be at Penn State this September… not confirmed but yeaa….

*UPDATE* He is joining Penn State in 2026-2027

If that's true, what a gut punch on a Friday.

It'll be turbulent for probably the next 3-4 years as playing levels re-adjust, the NCAA likely gets a bit older in terms of entry age, and high end guys like Mbuyi chomp at the bit to move up but... it really is the wild west right now.

Surprised he'd be going at 18 (again, if true) only because he's still so physically immature. If he struggles this season, given he was riding an incredible hot streak in the second half, does he defer?

But boy does it change the complexion of an Attack contending window. Does the team go all in to try and win with George and Mbuyi next season? That's suddenly a possibility.

Why not.

I'd like the team push as hard as they can every year .

I've followed the team since 1990.

2011 notwithstanding , there's never been a season where it all aligned.

NCAA just adds more complex layers. It just means whatever plans you might put in place need to be condensed.

Maybe the four year cycle has to be a two year cycle.

Damn the torpedos.
More bums in seats with George and Mbuyi.

And let's face it 2 playoff games each spring is the entry level playoffs.

I think next season absolutely is a ‘go for it year’ now. The two year window sounds more and more likely as Millpond just suggested. Even if they don’t go as far in the playoffs as we would like them to next season, the year after they should be just as competitive. Commitments can also get pushed further along down the road, with this years crop of 16 year old talent talent still sticking around I think the future is just as bright, but the windows of competitive groups staying 100% in tact is shorter.

I really think going forward you might just see teams stay the course with what they have because it’s going to be so unpredictable with who is coming and going. Maybe you see the bottom 3 teams in each conference sell but I think there will be more like a college system where the team you draft or recruit is the team you live with for the year

Key wording in the Attack announcement is that there's no set date for him to go yet. To be honest I find that to be the scariest - it's going to be a season-by-season assessment to see how he develops and how high he gets drafted.

Sorry to see Mbuyi committing to Penn St.

I guess I'm a little surprised to see the Attack putting out a release about this. Maybe it's just acknowledging the inevitable, but I hate seeing CHL players getting poached by the NCAA at 17 and 18 and I'd be pissed if my star player was going to be taken up to two years early.

Everyone I see on these boards seems to be taking these high-profile NCAAs signings way better than I would've expected.

Not much we as fans can do about it .

It'll take a few years to reach some sort of balance .

Mbuyi committed for 26-27 season. He will be drafted and signed by then.
