I know some Sabre fans will be against trading Power due to his upside (influenced no doubt by his draft status).

Positive: excellent skater, especially for his size. His offense is impressive, particularly his passing, and he is no slouch at scoring goals and both will get better.

Weakness. He is a train wreck defensively, particularly in his own zone. His positioning is head scratching and he looks like a deer in the head lights when he is defending. He is also one of the least physical players you will ever see.

We’ve been holding out hope that he will improve in his own end, like he has offensively, but I am convinced that it won’t happen in Buffalo.

I know he is young but 200 plus games into his career that excuse holds less water.

I think paired with the right defensive partner, he could be a formidable player, it just won’t be on Buffalo.

And for $8 million a season, on a team that is desperate to win now, he can figure out his game on another team.

Sabres needs are well documented. Preference for top line talent.

Is Power’s ceiling a #3 on a winning team? Is his style of play effective on the PK? If he can carry a second pairing and play #1 PK unit, then he’s got a lot of value.

How many young defenseman whose worst quality was defending end up turning it around, 1 is Quinn hughes

I would trade Byram first, he is more risky. Although Power certainly seems more valuable. I would even consider the idea of trading both of them, of course in one of the deals we need to get return a relatively young LD or RD with control, who will replace one of them in the second pair and who can move the puck and play PP2, for example.

People forgetting He is 21 at start of the season.

Hes a #1 Dman. Based on potential

Is his ceiling as a #1 on a winning team? If the Sabres believe this to be true then they should keep him and trade Dahlin for a massive haul.

A couple of things.

He isn’t the only reason the Sabres have been underperforming however I can’t foresee a scenario where he is playing at or near the same level next season and they are a playoff team.

Regarding Hughes, at this point in his career Hughes was a 70 point player, and if Power was trending as such I’d be all for keeping him.

It’s not his fault the Sabres playoff drought will be soon able to apply for a road permit. Another franchise might be more patient.

I proposed Power because of his salary, he is overpaid massively. and I think he would excite some opposing GM.

That's not how it works. Dahlin is a superstar with a long term contract who is absolutely untouchable, no matter what happens with Power.

Sabres are clearly needing huge adds to become competitive. Moving Dahlin would add those needed pieces and picks too. Then, they have Power to be the #D.
Or, Power isn’t a #1, but actually his ceiling is a #3. So the Sabres trade him. But then the return will reflect that limit.
If the Sabres believe they have two #1 D then trade the one with the greatest value, whose return will turn the club into a winner.

I understand your argument, I simply don't agree with it. You don't trade a player like Dahlin if you can help it at all.

Worst post, we don't trade Dahlin, just stop.

To be fair i only glimpsed at his offensive stats, does he suck at defense? Weird since he was a 1st oa.
It’s on oversimplification. There are defensive responsibilities where Power excels, and, frankly, there are things he’s just atrocious at.

#1) defending the rush: OP is great at this. Uses his stick and his mobility. Not afraid to put his body in front of the puck and rarely gets beat.

#2) Clearing the zone with possession: Really, this is where he excels. He is probably as good as or better than Dahlin at this. Good passing, smart with the puck. Very very rarely just dumps the puck to center ice and Id say when he does it, it is the right play. It’s an undervalued skill but is one of the main reasons OP’s metrics have looked good in the past.

#3) Defending the cycle. He’s so bad at this I don’t have much to say, other than, almost all the Sabres are bad at this. But he over extends, follows the puck out of the crease, loses his guy, I mean all of it. Again, the whole seems to suck at this, so not sure how much is him directly.

#4) Defending the front of the net: looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane. He’s so damn passive when it comes to physical net front stuff he may as well not even be on the ice. It’s the main reason he gets so much hate, because it’s obvious and it looks really bad when you can’t tie up a small, slight forward in any way. I wouldn’t even say he gets muscled out of position, he just cedes it. Like 0 physical engagement. It’s embarrassing at times.

Now, some things can be taught. If #2 could be taught, Rasmus Ristolainen would be a franchise defensemen. #3 certainly seems systemic with these young Sabres. #4 I have no idea. Is he just a wimp? Is he afraid of the rough stuff? It’s so absurd that I don’t have an answer.

If Power is also a #1, then why not keep him and move Dahlin to get the best return? The club still has Power to play Dahlin’s role.
IMO when a team has two players they consider #1 D or #1 goalie, and the club is clearly needing to fill holes in several other positions, they should trade the guy who’s return fills those holes and turns the club into a winner.
If Power has that king of value, then he’s the guy. If he doesn’t, but the Sabres believe he’s a #1 D, then move Dahlin.

I am on board with this as this is the softest most fragile team in the league and Power is the softest and most fragile player on the team.

I don’t see how he improves these flaws with this franchise.

I watched a lot of Sabre fans convince themselves for years that Tyler Myers was a great defenseman on a poor team and were reluctant to admit the obvious. I think the same thing is happening here.

You don't understand, Power is not a 1D, he's not even close to Dahlin yet. It's like telling the Canucks to trade Hughes, they have Hronek, that's stupid. Let Colorado trade Makar, they have Girard. Or maybe Detroit will trade Seider, they have Edvinsson? There's no point in trading Dahlin, that value thing doesn't work for us.

Isles fan and closet Sabres fan here in peace.

Sounds like the Noah Dobson situation. Dobson is 3 years older and a RHD coming off a 70 point season. He’s a RFA and will likely get a deal similar to Power. He’s also soft as butter on the defensive side despite being 6’ 4”.

Both teams need a shake up. Power has the aura of a #1OA pick but otherwise this seems like a fairly even swap if you factor in Dobson’s right handedness and better scoring stats.

I suppose it’s not realistic because it opens up a big hole on the right side of the Isles defense and I’m gonna guess this has a similar effect on the left side for the Sabres.

Is this fair value?

if the Sabres believe Power is a legit #1 then they have two such players. Trade the one who returns the most. If the Sabres believe Power is only a 3 then his value will reflect that.

I would say in terms of net front play and defense you are correct however his offense iq and vision is far superior if he hooked on his positioning and angling he would be a lot better also his gap control is awful he overestimated his reach advantage he tries and always plays the puck he has to to play the body doesn't need to level anybody just get in between the player and the puck he reaches to much

Power also has very low IQ.

No, that's not how it works. I already gave an example, who knows what they think, they don't know how to evaluate players and don't know how to train them. You keep saying the same thing like a woodpecker, but you don't even see or know the problem. I don't trade the best player on the team, I trade the extra PMD LD in Byram or Power and fill the holes with competent players. Stop talking this nonsense about value.

Is it fair to say the one with the better value is the better player? ... If so..why trade the better player? The logic doesn't add up.

Power also has very low IQ.

Actually he has great offensive IQ .. the defensive side is where he is lost.
