Owen Nolan and the Queen question

Hey Sharks fans, I’ve lost loved this photo of Mike Ricci (the prototypical ugly hockey player) taking the opening faceoff with the Queen and her purse. I’m pretty sure this was a pre season game

Question is - Owen Nolan was the captain of thr Sharks at that time, did he not take the opening faceoff because he’s a proud Irishman?

I’ve always thought this, it have no reference. You guys ever hear about this ceremonial faceoff?

Nolan is Catholic from Belfast and born during the height of the Troubles, so maybe?

He also apparently owns two restaurants named "Britannia Arms," so again, maybe?

I think the C on Ricci's sweater basically says it all, wasn't like he was just off camera seething.
