You know I am not an advocate for rushing young players but I would consider bringing him up soon to center Newhook and Dach. He can skate with them, he is good on face offs, has a great shot, high hockey IQ. I think he can help the Habs right now. If nothing else give him 10 games and see.
Beck brings a completely different energy to the game than Oliver Kapanen and yes it's one that we sorely lack.
I get keeping Kapanen over him may have been the way to go but mostly because of his Pro Experience.
I'd prefer we get this thing turned around a bit before calling up Beck he's a guy I would bet on to stick around once given the opportunity.

There’s no one here who is a bigger advocate of Beck’s potential than this writer. I find it somewhat interesting that until just recently there was a prevailing sentiment that Beck had limited offensive upside and would only be a career bottom six NHLer. That sentiment seems to be unravelling.

Despite my optimism for Beck's potential, I don't think, he, or for that matter, any player currently in Laval can make a materially positive impact on the Canadiens. There are no white knights or quick fixes.

Unfortunately, the team is flawed and the 3 factors that helped make the team competitive most games last year (a top, functioning first line; above average goaltending; and a mobile defence) has largely been AWOL this year. Well, at least so far. Last year's top line has been so ineffective in most games that MSL was forced to break them up. Our mobile defence has scored a total of 2 goals in the first 16 games in this season. 2 goals! And our goaltending has, at best, been spotty as exemplified by Primeau's horrible performance against Buffalo this afternoon.

Until these fundamental flaws are corrected, the presence of Beck, Roy, Tuch or anyone else from Laval will have little positive impact. Let's keep our young players in Laval where they can play big minutes. Get stronger. Get faster. Get better. In the long term, that is a better approach for a player like Beck that many here thought was at best a bottom 6 defensive utility forward.

How things can change.

Looking at last 7 or 8 Cup Winners. They all had big physical mobile defense. Something I would really focus on in off season.

I don't watch nearly enough of the prospects to be taken seriously but of the limited viewing of Beck, he just seems to have nhler written all over him.

A wise approach. As I have previously noted: our supposed depth at defence is somewhat illusory.

Our depth at defense was always too dependent on progression by key players, I see it now that the "dust has settled" proverbially-speaking.

And of course, the needed progression unfortunately has not materialized yet so we find ourselves in our current conundrum,

We traded Harris and Kovacevic this Summer to make some room for Hutson, Barron, Xhekaj, and Struble; and only Hutson has shown anything more than just flashes of potential this year.

All of which to say that I would not be surprised if we drafted a defenseman with one of our firsts this year. Hopefully we do indeed end up with CGY's pick and it is top-15.

We already lucked-out once by drafting Hutson way lower than he should have gone, but let us hope that we get similarly lucky in this year's draft. Or that Hughes somehow rightly identifies and acquires an undervalued defenseman ready for a breakout with us.

That, alongside continued progression by our prospects like Mailloux, Beck, Roy, Engstrom (who's low-key played very well for Laval as a defenseman rookie), and more, would help our team out tremendously in the future.

Fiddler has potential with Calgary pick. This offseason I would sign Poink and try trade for Andersson. Veterans on right side who play well structured game. They should fit in well, good for Reinbacher development also. More Guhle back to his natural side, he'll be better D.

Defense needs a lot of work this summer. Major mistake leaving it like this last summer.

Hughes as an upgrade on Primeau can help a little with no real developmental downside

Hughes is a solid, calm, face the shooter style goaltender who can make the routine or expected save but has limited athleticism that would allow him to make the high-light saves. But after watching Primeau leak 5 goals on 15 shots, I would gladly take the expected save type of goalie. I would agree that Hughes presents as a little bit better option at this stage. But we're not winning long-term, with either.

Do we expect Beck to make the big club next year? I hope we keep Evans and have him and Beck as our middle 6 Cs next year. Sounds underwhelming, but I like hard-working two-way Cs.

I wouldn't put it out of question that he sees time later in the year, but yes I can't imagine he's in Laval for 2 seasons if he continues his current play.

Not saying our D is elite, but you are describing Guhle, Xhekaj, Mailloux and to a lesser extent, Struble.
I don't think any fair minded observer would call Xhekaj or Mailloux mobile at this stage of their respective development. When you add Savard, who is hardly mobile and Hutson, who has a bit of quickness but is routinely overpowered in the defensive zone, you can see why this defensive corps and consequently the team is struggling.

As I have said, the prospect strength of this team is in the forward group ( Demidov, Hage, Beck, Tuch, Mesar, Florian, Roy, etc.) and not the defensive group. Other than Hutson, and to a lesser extent, Reinbacher, our defensive prospects do not excite me.

The forgotten man here is Engstrom. He's definitely mobile and decently tall. Not sure he's physically ready for the show, but let him simmer in Laval and he could end up a big, mobile and tenacious defender on a 3rd or 2nd pairing.

If we draft Misa, with Caufield and Demidov that's a lot of fire power up front. Can carry a 50 point Beck in top 6, given his other attributes. Suzuki, Dach and Slaf are solid offensively also. We should be fine

I doubt they re-sign Dvorak, so there should be a center spot left. And basically just Beck/Kapanen to fill it.

If Beck continues his present level of 200ft hockey , I’d be shocked if he isn’t called up in Dec - especially if Habs are able to maintain their 3-5pts window for wildcard into US Thanksgiving less than 3-weeks away & Laine potentially being activated

Becks face off prowess will be too much to pass up on

Engstrom is not forgotten. But after a strong start, Engstrom's game regressed significantly until his last game. But from this writer's perspective, Engstrom, is at best a 2nd pairing defenceman. maybe even that is wishful thinking. He's far more mobile than Mailloux, but is often overpowered in his defensive zone. What is promising, is his ability to avoid the forechecker and create time and space to exit the defensive zone by either skating the puck out or passing. Also impressive is his ability to walk the line at the offensive blueline and make a positive play under pressure. Engstrom has some upside, but he's no star in the making. I wouldn't be surprised if at the upcoming draft, unless we're drafting 1 OA, Hughes goes defense with his first of the two 1st round picks.

It'd be surprising unless Schaefer was available.. the draft is mostly forwards, after Schaefer, the next best guy is Hensler and he's a mid teens pick at best.

Well, I would agree. I think that 2025 draft is as overrated as the 2024 was underrated. I think Montreal will draft in the top 5 or at least close to it. I also think that a lot of teams will be seduced by the slew of forwards that are jockeying in the projected top 5 (Hagens, Martone, Misa, McQueen, Frondell, Ryabkin and Spence). I think no one will challenge Hagens at 1OA and the rest are all a toss up, at least as I write. Over the next 6 months things could change. And change drastically. But I think its reasonable to foresee that Schaefer may be available when we draft. But if necessary, this may be the time to use our wealth of high picks to move up a couple of spots to secure a player that Hughes identifies as a game changer for the team. But only if management believes that Schaefer can be that all so illusive No. 1 defenceman. We certainly don't have such a prospect in our system currently.

The last few years defensemen have been risers throughout the season, I wonder if something similar happens this year, maybe another euro defenseman a la Reinbacher.
