Prospect Info: Owen Beck

I see them as apples and oranges. Beck brings a type of game we need in our bottom 6.
Namely a player who's dossier includes being the main cog in a defensive team's run to an OHL championship (Peterborough).
To becoming a main cog in leading an offensive team to the Memorial Cup while adding more production to that defensive posture...
To the point of being named MVP.

I like Kapanen but I haven't seen him enough or even heard that he plays this same style of game.
Is Kapanen NHL center material is he a proven PK guy and face-off specialist?
I really don't think hey are competing for the same ice.

Yes Kapanen plays both of those roles, his offense is a bit different as he is a net front guy. There's room for both on the team. Ideally one takes 3C and the other 4C, with the ability to jump up and play wing on line 3 for the 3rd periods so we have two guys capable of taking d zone draws should one get kicked out.

I'm fairly convinced he's the leader of the pack as far as our forwards go.
I'll be very surprised if Kapanen doesn't go back over the pond this year.

Admiral I always respect and appreciate the points you make but Beck could develop into a player more dynamic than Robert Thomas? Not seeing that level of upside but you have seen Beck many more times than me.

I think that Beck is another player who is predictably pigeon-holed as a 3rd or 4th line center by his success being an all round player who can play effective defence , can kill penalties and is strong on face-offs.

I see much more in Beck's game. He is a strong, powerful skater who has an excellent wrist shot that can be used from a stationary position or off the rush. As he showed in the rookies' game against the Leafs, Beck has excellent hands which produced a number of plays that had the fans oohing and aahing. In Saginaw, Beck, at times, played the left half-boards and was repeatedly set up by Parekh for a one-timer. In Montreal going forward he will have either Hutson or Mailloux passing the puck on the second power play unit.

I think Beck has considerable untapped offensive potential and as he matures and gets strong, that potential will be unleashed. I think Beck's predicted development will make a number of current Canadiens, expendable.

I think he needs to play with more pace. I remember his first training camp he was consistently attacking Ds and using his shot in stride. He changed his style after that, more of a slow down the play style.

I think he can easily become a 3rd line fwd once he figures the right balance. He's got all the tools.

I think Roy has been ok, and am also not quite sold yet based on what I saw last year.

The thing is, I watched him play several time here in Sherbrooke, and each time he was underwhelming. To the point I doubted he would ever make it to the NHL, but then, on the other hand, he really impressed me at the WJC. So, I'm on the fence about him.

At some point the team will need to stop putting in kids into the line-up and keep its older players. The good young players will be traded away either for missing pieces or future pieces that can fill in once the team needs a refresh.

They will likely trade players that are NHL calibre but are surplus to requirements for futures to extend the years of contention.

No way you would put money on that. Roy is a vrtual lock and Beck is likely going to laval unless there is an injury/trade that opens a spot.

Anderson - Evans - Gallagher

Beck's competition is Evans imo and I do not see him taking that spot as opposed to getting more ice time in Laval.

I agree, Beck's competition is Evans, or even Dvo. But here is the thing, I disagree that Roy is a lock. not because of Beck, but because of Roy himself. I don't know how many times in the past I have seen young players expected to get a spot only to screw up at training camp and get send down. Let's see what happens, and I will be happy if he makes it because we need him, or at least, we need what we think he can bring.

I remember suggesting that Beck could start forcing Management's hand with a Suzuki Like Post Season.
While he was never going to match the production he was certainly going to do other Beck things that all add up.
I think he got dinged up against the Soo Greyhounds like half the team and wasn't 100% for London.
The rest they got before the Mem Cup got him back on track and I don't think anyone can complain about his Tournament.
The bottom group of forwards can't get complacent with Beck Kapanen and Tuch all very close.

That's a good point.. let's be real, up to this point, there weren't exactly guys banging on the door to get forward spots for various reasons. Two main ones come to mind:

1) Lack of quality F prospects to push these guys
2) An insane amount of injuries - you were probably going to play whether you earned it or not.

I've seen some posts about guys not caring or seeming to care, and this definitely could have been a factor. Now, there's tons of bodies on D and on F and the cream will rise to the top in both scenarios.

As someone pointed out even Joshua Roy can't feel secure at this point.
A certain Justin Barron made that mistake and he has yet to regain support from a good portion of this fan base.
