You'd think people thought we were trying to contend this year and next.

Keeping Monahan advances the floor of the team for a few years and then he craters when we are actually going to be competitive. It would have made no sense.
Are we not trying to contend next year?

Please don’t try and start working that narrative in now, if we’re not in the playoffs next year it’s a failure

Dude, come on. You're a high quality poster. When's the last time a coach said "you know what, my player's potential is pretty limited, forget him in a top 6 role". They can't say that.

And I'm not saying there's **no** chance, but they're slim.
The interview was not fluff not even close.
Vincent went into detail why he wasn't ready to put a limit on this player's ceiling.
Owen Beck has been under estimated at every level.
He also talked about Beck being a top six worthy forward given his versatility.

Marty St Louis "He's got great assets"
Marty isn't slotting him in where he did otherwise.
I'll stick to the professional assessments for now.

I realize he doesn't have the sexy game many people love.
What he does have is a winner's game played with a winning attitude.
These are the guys who get the icetime.

Beck is the type of player that gets you through the playoffs. His Memorial Cup performance last season highlighted that quality.

Yes we are expecting to make the playoffs we don't believe we will be contenders.
Two different animals in my books. I don't see 16 teams as contenders I see 4-6 in any given year.

Thing is people use the word 'contend' in a purposefully ambiguous way. In this case, certain commentators have clearly shown themselves to be a big, big fans of Kent Hughes and will defer to whatever Kent Hughes achieves. We've been posting here for long enough to understand this isn't a rare position to hold -- many Habs fans automatically defer to the Habs.

If the Habs finish X out of 32 next year, they will have had a successful season and every other fan would be wrong and possibly irrational/hysterical/bipolar [insert other insults for other not-as-good fans] for expecting anything different.

Well Sly did, told a player to accept he is a third liner. Not sure if it was to McCaron, but it was a 1st round pick.

Cronin called McTavish a 3rd liner this season, but it was so noteworthy because it never happens

Beck stays up and Dach moves on.
Because of the draft pedigree, the cost of acquisition, the lure of the package (size and skill), and probably his video gaming skills that make him a fit in today's NHL locker rooms, he will get another try in the locker room, but I' curious to see what the update on his current injury is?

I hope they give him a try on the wing instead next year. Beck is a better C option than Dach, IMO, even for a second line role, because he takes care of all the details at that position.

Beck seems like the kind of player that is best suited for a third line role, but he can play in the top 6 with talented players. Similar to what I see from Heineman as well. With Demidov coming over, I think Beck is fine between him and Laine. He is smart enough to know that those two will run things offensively, and his job will be to work hard to get them the puck and to offer faceoff wins and defensive skills. Beck is also no slouch on offensive either, so he won't be a liability during offensive scenarios.

J-F Houle, Michel Therrien, and Lefebvre. Basically the terrible coach club.

They wanted to be in the mix this year and be in the play-offs next year.

That's not 'contending'.

Signing an oft injured Sean Monahan to a long term contract, when you don't plan on legitimately being a playoff threat until year 3 of that deal, would be short-sighted and counter-intuitive.

I don't think he has the creativity to be the driver on an offensive line, but he executes well a smart and simple brand of hockey. That is useful.

I could actually see him being an effective center next to Demidov until the habs land a better 2nd line C. His proficency in the meat and potatoes department would make room for Demidov to be the maestro from the wing.

Yeah the most important thing for me is that his line doesn't shit the bed like they have far too often this season. These past two games they've been part of the solution which is all we can ask for from Beck.
I mean even the goal he got caught flat footed on it's not like he was in a bad position. He was exactly where he was supposed to be when covering for a Dman. Chances are he'll never make that mistake again and will force the player to the outside at the very least.

He can be a decent facilitator IMO. You put him on a line with two talented wingers and he'll make life easier for them and support the puck possession game just fine. He has a legit pro shot that he hasn't flashed yet in the NHL too, he can surprise a few goalies with it if he can learn to put himself in the right position to use it. His wrister is pretty wicked.

People really sell this guy short. He's a workhorse of a C that has been relied upon every step of the way in every league he has been in. He's going to be a good one.

That's right, but I don't see the elite skills to drive an offensive line.

He sure can take a hit though and is not afraid to take it, but I am not sure he can dish out the way Heineman can...

To me he seems like a solid bottom 6, who will be responsible..
