Overdrive & Kyper and Bourne - Leafs Discussion Week of May 20

It's possible but his wife just opened a restaurant in Edmonton. That tells me they plan on staying in Edmonton long term.
Have you ever heard of selling a business ? I think Connor’s 15M+ salary will cover their closing costs.

..and well they should, pressure are just words you say to yourself, if you dont let those words creep into your brain, there is no pressure. Pressure is going to war, pressure is fighting a disease, pressure is your wife nagging you about somethign you dont care about and she wants you to care ( joking) .... pressure is not hockey getting paid millions of dollars to play a kids game.

What is the worse thing that could happen if you lose a series? You go home and relax in your mansion... go on multiple sponsored golfing trips int he summer.

Pressure is perspective, those that don't have it, feel it. Those that do have it, don't feel it.
Some players today have never know pressure in their lives. Most lived pampered lives growing up and were always told they were the best. They aren’t used to criticism and don’t accept that it comes with being a highly paid professional athlete. Gary Roberts said it best. He said that the media and fan attention he got while playing in Toronto made him feel accountable and focused so he would always give his best effort and never take a day off. Patches said essentially the same thing after game 7. This needs to become a big part of the team’s player evaluation when drafting, trading or signing free agents.

I'm sure there's elements of that.

But it's pretty clear that Kypreos has some connection with the Marner camp - he's been pretty steadily campaigning and negotiating on his behalf almost all year now.

Kypreos is basically an HFBoard poster using the usual party lines when trying to defend Marner - what about Nylander, what about Matthews, blame the GM, blame others, etc.

It's not even subtle at this point.
I usually enjoy the show but this and his article in the Star have gone too far. His loss of objectivity and love for Mitch and hate on for Matthews and Nylander sound personal. Totally unprofessional IMO.

It's definitely that all this stuff happens and he decides he's had enough. Other than weather, there is no reason to leave. He's not coming home that's for sure.
Who knows. All of this pure speculation at this point. We’ll know this summer because if he doesn’t sign then, all hell will break loose in Edmonton.

I find it really insightful though - on some level, it feels like he's the window into the Marner camp. Even Friedman acknowledged it earlier this week.

Whatever Kyper is spewing on his show, is almost certainly a glimpse into the emotions and mood amongst Marner, his family, and his agent right now.

So when Kypreos whines about the lack of criticism pointed towards the other two, or confirms that unless they made it to the conference finals that he's leaving, or pushing back on the idea that he "held out" 6 years ago, or even the Schedule B bonuses stuff? That's all direct talking points and mood from the Marner camp, in my opinion.

It's not even subtle at this point.

yeah. like Dreger did it on the second contract right? really talking as if someone was putting it in his ear. and you know. let's be fair Matthews doesn't get as much crap spewed his way - probably because he's the #1 centre and first overall and people wanna baby that as much as possible because we never had that before not since Sundin anyway - and we didn't draft Sundin. (but he's getting flack now because it's MAJORLY OBVIOUS there's an issue - injury or not - because then the 4 Nation thing comes up)

Will gets his pound of flesh but he's so blaise about it doesn't bother him (and he's getting flack because he's a bit too laid back)

Marner gets his because i think he's made every bit of is time here drama and doesn't back it up in the playoffs. Growing up here - he should know that the regular season means squat to Toronto fans. (and at the same time, once it starts people will slightly FORGIVE his playoff performance until it's back to get there again). but i also think the fact he can't own up to his own failures is childish anyway.

Definitely. Which points to be a big problem with the Marner camp for me. Players, their agents and families have way too much to say about how the team is run. And Marner’s dad has a bad attitude and big mouth. He went on sports radio to complain that Mitch wasn’t being considered seriously enough for the captaincy. Who does that ?

When was the last time you heard him speak?

I don't see McDavid all of a sudden deciding he's had enough in Edmonton. They just signed his buddy Draisaitl long term. They brought in his coach. He's always taken team friendly deals so the Oilers can add depth. I can't see him changing his tune and leaving a good situation.

You could have said the same thing about Marner a couple years ago.

Not the team friendly deal part, but we also went from describing playing in Toronto as like being treated like a 'God' to speeding out of town. Even leaving behind his best pal in Auston

Guys can change their minds fairly quickly

Even he he does end up eventually signing there it would be fun to watch Oilers fan crap all over themselves for the next year until it actually happens.

What is interesting to me about this is that it points to dysfunction on the team. Root that out by letting Marner walk and maybe we finally get some real chemistry in that group

Never heard of a restaurant manager? They're people who run restaurants for the people who own them.

Could also cheaply start the restaurant, keep it going a year with all the publicity and then pull out haha.

I think raptors players like Carter did something like this.

It was appropriate for him to say that. It did turn into a negative armchair quarterback forum.

My 3 worst Leaf Moments:

1. Loss to MTL
2. Loss to CBJ
3. Trading a 1st to get rid of Marleau's contract

My fave 3:

1. Making the playoffs the 1st season of MM, AM, and WN.
2. Beating OTT 2025
3. Acquiring Tanev and OEL
I feel like the series win against Tampa isn't getting love because of what happened after... but c'mon we were all a giddy, jubilant group for a solid 3-4 days after that. I'd add that over Tanev/OEL personally... I wasn't as happy, especially with OEL until I started watching them play for us.

Some other worst moments that are fun to remember:
Mr. David Ayres
The absolute gut wrenching unlucky draft lottery loss in '15
Trading Naz
Perry knee on JT, Game 1 in 2021
Panthers loss after finally getting over 1st round woes (absolutely out classed)
Nylander 1st contract negotiations
Marner contract negotiations
34/16 high cap hits

Sorry, I'm not sure where I'm going with this.

They talked about Marner not holding out like Nylander on Kyper and Bourne. They're forgetting what happened.

Nylander held out until the last 5 minutes, before the Leafs caved. Because he joined the team late, his cap hit was 10.27 in year 1, and artificially lower for the rest of it (Still somehow higher than Pastrnak). They were able to fit Nylander at 10.27 because Marner and Matthews were still on ELC and still had the space. The Leafs caved with Marner during training camp because otherwise he wouldn't have been able to join the team with the overpayments they already gave to Matthews and Nylander.

They really thought Nylander was going to be the difference way back in 2018 :biglaugh: It was definitely worth tanking the franchise. Same thing with Marnie in 2019. Scary scary stuff. Even in the case of trading a 1st to get rid of one year of Marleau. And we wonder where the players get "we were close!!!!" from.
