Overdrive & Kyper and Bourne - Leafs Discussion Week of May 20

It's definitely something I've changed my mind on.

While I don't mind a cap of some sort (it could be approached differently like a luxury tax ect)

But at this point it's impossible to deny that quite warm weather US markets have an absolutely massive imbalance.

Toronto at least as a bigger city as a bit of a draw - but it comes with poor weather, massive pressure, Canadian taxes. It's insanely frustrating to listen to smug fans from other markets brag about their sweet deals on contracts.

Something needs to change.
Especially when we hear BS things like pressure.

Like ya, the fans don't give as much as a shit in Florida when like 2 yrs ago you could get a pair of season tickets, 2 jerseys, free parking and 10% off concessions for $600.

Meanwhile if you want to get tickets in Toronto you are looking at like $300 to sit in the nosebleeds.

Ya there's no pressure alright. No one is paying anything to be there.

Kyper and Bourne was good yesterday. They all had to come up with lists positive and negative in the SHANNY era. The positives were as dull as you can imagine, and the negative so glaring.

True, but in the case of Bennett the Leafs would be acting like one of Ferris' preferred clients - a player in a bidding war.

With Marner the Leafs are the obstacle.
Bennett with 2 goals tonight and I believe 10 goals in the playoffs so far this year and he is tough.
I would take him over any of our core 4. He is a winner

I saw some of it on YT. I'll get around to watching all of it one day.

At around the 27 min mark when one of the guys brings up $7.5M spend on Mrzaek, and two other guys instead of signing Hyman for $5.5M I laughed at Bourne's reaction. lol

I didnt follow Bennett's career on Calgary, but his reg season stats werent great. But his payoff stats picked up a bit. I remember him being grilled as an underachiever.

But since coming to Florida, everything picked up as a changed man. Guy is a monster in the playoffs.

Yup. Players go to Florida and turn awesome. Hyman goest to Edmonton and has a monster year. Players come to the leafs and turn soft, effectively neutered. I wonder if it’s the culture in the room or management

Was interesting that Kyper took a step back and all but apologized for his critic of Shanny and Dubas the previous day. Damage control by Kypreos.

What I liked about this broadcast was David Amber saying this idea that the relationship between players, media, and fans really doesn’t HAVE to be acrimonious.

Well of course. Everyone would.

Is that a realistic trade offer though? I'd say that's not and wouldn't ever be on the table from EDM.
Whether it's realistic or not isn't the point.

You said no Leafs fan with a brain would, and you just said you would. Oops. :sarcasm:

I don't think many people would have thought a team would trade Rantanen for Marner, but the offer was made.

Shanahan’s whole era was also premised on an acrimonious relationship with the media and protecting the players from the Kessel Phaneuf Salute Gate era drama.

Which is odd in a way because the Leafs were owned by not one but two media giants during the whole era. They owned the “state” media and had this protective bubble wrap policy. Overcorrection to the max and has just made that era of players very unrelatable as humans.

It was appropriate for him to say that. It did turn into a negative armchair quarterback forum.

My 3 worst Leaf Moments:

1. Loss to MTL
2. Loss to CBJ
3. Trading a 1st to get rid of Marleau's contract

My fave 3:

1. Making the playoffs the 1st season of MM, AM, and WN.
2. Beating OTT 2025
3. Acquiring Tanev and OEL

Yes it will help. I don't think it changes much in regards to top players changing teams. Guys like McDavid, Draisaitl and MacKinnon likely still stay with their teams.
Draisaitl and MacKinnon will stay for sure because they’re committed to their teams long term. McDavid is another case and I’m not so sure what he’ll do. However, every team would find the money to pay him if he went the UFA route.

AJ Greer brings plenty of snot, so does Tom Wilson, both can help offensively too, so on this point your dead wrong imo……..
Greer has scored 19 goals in 241 games in the league. That’s hardly helping offensively. Wilson is a unicorn. So is Knies but good luck finding players like that in today’s game.

I don't see McDavid all of a sudden deciding he's had enough in Edmonton. They just signed his buddy Draisaitl long term. They brought in his coach. He's always taken team friendly deals so the Oilers can add depth. I can't see him changing his tune and leaving a good situation.

It may depend on where his family wants to live. Edmonton winters are brutal and it’s Edmonton. Time will tell.

Cool story man! You really got me there!
