He was gone regardless. He was brought in to be the bridge between Rogers and Bell and now that Rogers has taken over and Pelley hired, Shanny is redundant. Knowing the leafs, they'll sell his non contract renewal as a scalp to the fan base.

I agree, I think the team might have been even better had he been given permission to trade Marner when he still could, just after arriving here.

But he built the best team around those Core 5 if you include Rielly. the GM can't score goals.

I think he should definitely be given the chance to re-jigg the top 6. I have no problem if Tavares stays on sub $5M deal on the 3rd line.

That gave me some clarity that the clown show may continue indefinitely.

If they re-sign Shanahan and run it back I'm 100% not watching another Leafs game or posting on this forum until they rebuild. I know I'm a drama queen and I've been that way on this forum all the way back to 2005 but I am not exaggerating or being theatrical here. There would literally be no point in watching anymore.

This fanbase is angrier now than they've ever been under this group. Shanahan cannot come back if MLSE wants to maximize profits.

I don't disagree with the first sentence, but the fact that they let him serve a lame-duck year in the first place speaks volumes and the year ended terribly. They're not bringing him back, it doesn't make business sense.

I don't give Tre a full pass here. He mortgaged the future for players who were never going to move the needle. Leafs don't pick in the first round til 2027. I get the Carlo trade but not a soul can tell me a 4th liner costs what Laughton did. Just seems like it's two steps forward and two steps back with him. Makes a good move. Follows it up with a bad one.

Tre has been of record several times saying he's not a fan of trying to build a team at the trade deadline.

Think of which member of 'management' was most likely to get the boot if we didn't have better results this year, and I think you'll figure out who was the impetus for the deadline activity.

It’s different now though, Shanny knows he’s going to be on the hot seat after this extension. He’s got 3 maybe 4 tries left before he’s forced to try a new coach/GM, and then after that fails they’re going to have to seriously start considering maybe thinking about asking him if he’s willing to get promoted out of the hockey part of MLSE.

It wasn't just that though, the Lightning leaders met that summer and decided that everyone had to change their approach. Just being the more skilled team wasn't enough, they decided they had to play tougher from top to bottom.

The Leafs on the other hand must have recognized the change the first time they met the Bolts the next season, saw that new attitude carry them to a Cup and our boys decided "Meh, not for me."

Every year the Leafs brass find a different setup to surround the stars with in hopes that the depth/blueline will basically be the Goodrow and Coleman. But it's not enough.

So, for the hundredth time over the past few years I'll repeat it: As long as this core is the core, they'll never winning anything. They know exactly what they need to do to win and they simply refuse to do it.

Therefore, if the Leafs got themselves 3 Sam Bennetts it wouldn't be enough if Auston, Mitch & Willie are the other 3 in the top 6.

It's not a very logical case, but there's absolutely a business case for bringing Shanahan back - he's guaranteed them playoff home dates every year, and they are coming off a season where they just had SEVEN playoff home games.

The sheer amount of money they've made the past month with those home playoff games is absurd.

That's the one and only angle where Shanahan has a case to continue running as president
