for sure, I guess I'm looking to be more impressed by what Ovy did, even though the numbers are essentially the same, well Ovy did it in 1 less game.

I guess the consistency of Ovy popping in on average 44 goals over 20 years just blows me away. It's just remarkable someone caught a Gretzky record.

It might be the most prestigious record of all time. It’s kind of like the home run record in baseball. Homeruns aren’t the most important thing in baseball but they’re important and carry a lot of prestige. Goals aren’t points but they’re better than assists. It’s the single most important thing a skater can contribute. This is a massive record and for him to get there in one fewer game is simply unthinkable. Especially factoring in the eras.

Better than Gretzky. That’s amazing.

I don't think anyone will beat Gretzky's assists (1,963) or points (2,857) records. He also still holds the record for most career goals in the regular season and playoffs combined, with 1,016.

Still, it's amazing that Ovi has caught Gretz for the regular season goals record, which was once also thought unreachable.

not only that, Ovy missed a lot of games during his prime years, although what does he have this year? 41 goals in 60 games @ 39. That's actually nuts. I hope he plays into his 40s.

I said about 5-6 years ago that Ovi had no shot. I expected Father Time to catch up to him like it does everyone else. What he is doing at 40 is unthinkable.

Imagine, how good of a goal scorer caufield is. He is in his prime and ovi has him bested by 6 goals in 15 less games at 39 years old. It is simply incredible. I stopped predicting his demise a couple years ago as he seems to get better with age.

I just find it incredible. Then when ppl were saying he’d break the record this year, I still thought the 6 weeks missed would seal his fate. The guy is unbelievable and one of the more likeable personalities in the league. I couldn’t be happier for him.

Ovechkin is about to break the most sacred and revered individual record of all time.

Yet, it just seems like its crept up on people. I know the hockey world is talking about it but this kind of record ought to be transcending the sport to a greater extent than it is.

Was watching the game where Gretzky scored 5 goals to reach 50 goals in 39 games. Number 50 was into an empty net, understand why Ovie wants a good goal for 895.

Don`t know if it`s on Youtube but I remember Frank Mahovlich`s 500th goal. Heeled his shot in the slot which fooled the goaltender and it slowly crossed the goal line. Guys would like a nice one for a milestone.

When I watched Gretzky on TV years ago, I think he said that the record of his he was most proud of was 50 goals in 39 games.

I hope he does it today. If he does it today, he officially passes Gretzky's pace. They are tied in goals with Ovechkin having one game in hand.

Incredible that he's doing this after having a broken leg earlier this year.
