Ovechkin Milestone Thread - Passed some guy named Wayne, now NHL goalscoring leader (895 !!!)

I've seen this noted a lot, and it's not accurate. Howe had been retired for two years before he went to the WHA, and only because of the chance to play with his sons. It's highly unlikely such an option could have come up in the NHL, and as such his totals would have been even lower (he had 786 goals at his first retirement).
Agreed. It's well documented that Howe came out of retirement to play with Mark and Marty. The point I was trying to make is Gretzky probably would have found a way to push himself past alternate-reality Howe, even if Howe had pushed his total up to 900 or 950. Hopefully Ovechkin puts some distance between himself and #894, just to make it tougher for any future challengers.

Yes, Ovechkin got there even faster than I thought. Now lets just hope he can score another 6 goals this season and hit 900 against Crosby in the final game of the season!
What about 13 seasons left part of that prediction 10 years ago?
If he indeed goes for 3 more years (looks like he will not), 1K is a possibility.

He won’t go for 1000 IMO, but the only member of the 900 goal club sounds pretty sweet.

Also interesting would be if he could catch 99 for the most goals including playoffs (1016)…currently at 966. He’s got 58 games left to do it in the same amount as Gretz.

To show the importance of era-adjusting, if Ovechkin had maintained his OWN Shooting Percentage from the last seven season (2018-19 through 2024-25), age 33-39, over his entire career on the same SOG, he'd be at 1,006 career goals right now (+112 career goals).

Ovechkin can still go for several years if he wants to. Personally I think players shouldn't be able to retire if they're still as good as Ovechkin. There should be some way to force players like that to play until the wheels fall off so there's no ifs and buts left when they finally retire. Both Selanne and Jagr kept playing until they lost several steps. If Ovechkin is still productive next year and desides to retire it will just feel wrong!

I wish he could have scored the record breaking goal against a team like Edmonton or Pittsburgh, but ah well! Almost guaranteed to happen next game.

If next year is really his last year in the NHL, I think he ends up at around 930.

I’ve happened to see Ovi live only once back in 2004 I guess, during lockout, in Moscow at 1st channel Cup hockey game. Little did I know whom I had a privilege to witness and enjoy, back then.

What can I say and add now?

It’s a really, REALLY rare feeling when everything goes just “as planned” and feels 100% right. Ovi has EARNED every inch of his reputation, goal by goal and game by game creating his own unique image, from his very first shift he’s taken all the burden, and has delivered at a level never seen before and has shown a durability a very few had ever matched before.

Classy sportsman, team-first man, who has deep respect to the game, players and everything that surrounds while having such an open and emotional personality (unlike Datsyuk e.g. who I adore but is too modest and closed emotionally).

Never complained, dived or been too proud of himself (at least I’ve never seen him bragging, despising opponents or doing stuff like this).

Even his “game-by-game” attitude, his ability to cope with stress and media attention - all those things compliment his personality just perfectly.

A true leader, inspirer and a perfect example of a sportsman and a MAN.

A very VERY DESERVED achievement.

You’re the GOAT, Ovi! Just a living legend we are blessed to be able to witness!
