I hope Ovie only scores empty net goals until he beats the record just to infuriate some silly people in this thread! Goals are goals and he's out there when the game is on the line.

in what way was the game on the line in the last 2 games when ovie scored empty netters with a 2 goal lead with 10-15 seconds left... maybe the game was on the line at the faceoff with the score 1-4 with 3 seconds left as well...yeah right, lol.

because wsh had an line of players out of gas who could not make it to the bench? i am not sure why everyone is pretending about ovie and the empty netters. i find it rather bizarre. it is what it is, stad padding at the highest level we´ve seen in the history of the league.

Disagreed completely. ovies defense in these situations is suspect. the only reason he is out there is to bag easy goals to keep him happy and chase down the record. the coaching staff and management think that is more important than if the caps lose a game once in a while. its an understandable move by the caps. anybody saying else is just kidding themselves massively. just keeping it real here...

Take away all EN goals and Brett Hull suddenly has the most goals in a single season. Oiler fans don't want to go down that road.

No Gretzky still has the record for Iafrate goals over Hull, 88 in 1981-1982 to 86 (two less games for Hull though), but Hull gets second place as Gretzky's 1983-1984 had 81 legit Iafrate goals.

I definitely think Hull in 1990-1991 is a more impressive goal scoring season than any of Gretzky's (or Ovechkin's for that matter) seasons though, same thing with his three year run.

why are you asking that. nobody has said anyone should pass up a chance to score a goal. the discussion was about whether ovie was out there because he is defense mastermind or because wsh is primarily interested in him increasing his chances at the record.

i have to assume you did not read any of my posts since you asked a completely irrelevant question, but thats pretty telling. ovis mega fans cant just admit its stat padding and instead have to try dress it up as something else.

On one hand it’s a little sketchy and uncomfortable padding his totals with those empty netters. On the other hand he’s really amazing at doing it. Is actually kind of entertaining to see him be so elite at it; a guy like matthews doesn’t seem to have any interest or ability to dominate at greasy engs. Better get used to it though because ovi will be out there battling for the eng until he breaks the record.
