ughh that sucks for the league and fans of hockey, but way better than the potential worst case that some were fearing.

Better than worst case...he will likely come back by end of 2024...
I read this as he is likely out a month+. That could be the pessimist in me, but obviously if it were something minor he would only be day to day. It sounds like he needs a further examination which could mean they want to confirm the damage.

"week to week" is good news IMO. Obviously, a lot will be determined by the further testing he receives tomorrow once back home.

Looks like it is not a torn ligament, more like a "cracked" one. I have accumulated a good number of such "cracks" myself. They never fully heal, but the body adjusts and you stop feeling them, you are just more likely to feel after a big hike that your knee is "swollen" and the leg does not bend sideways easily.

Surgically repairing those things isn't usually worth it, you just rest and do light exercise. Sometimes the rest is like 1-2 weeks, sometimes more than a month. Usually I walk with a limp after injuries like that not because it hurts much, but because the knee feels weak and it is almost as if it is about to bend under the weight.

Edit: Oh look, the doctors on Twitter think the same.

It didn't look that bad, but knee injuries can be deceptive. I once stepped wrong and felt this sharp nerve pain in my knee. I could walk on it and put weight on it, but slight changes of angle were a huge problem. Something like playing hockey would be impossible, even though you can walk. It took me almost 4 months for the knee to return to somewhat normal.

Point is, the knee is delicate and any injury is especially felt in a sport like hockey, that requires putting pressure on the knee from the sides. So you can't just look at whether he was able to put weight on it or screamed in pain. It might still not be fine for hockey.

It is a shame, too, since Ovechkin was actually leading NHL in goal-scoring and seemed to have a serious resurgence this year. It would have been cool to see what he could still do at his age, but now it's quite likely that his form will be gone whenever he does return to playing. We'll see, though.

Hmmm but how exactly does this relate to Yzerman and his rebuild? :sarcasm:

No but for real what we're witnessing with Ovechkin is something special. Honestly didn't realize he was first all-time in shots, but I guess that makes sense lol.
