1 more year after this one on his current contract. The team is playing well and he seems to be having fun. Most of us think he'll finish it out at least.
If things are going well, who knows. Maybe he Jagr's it for a while longer.

Not to bring a turd into this, but....
This was at Springfield CC on the 4th hole. He hit at least 40 range balls before one went in. Im pretty sure it was one of those scramble things where you could buy mulligans and the money went to charity.

It was a team tourney I believe, but OV just stayed at the one hole as groups went through, and hit a ball with each group.
Still pretty good, I’ve played hundreds of par threes, come close, but never got one.

Same, hit one to about 3 inches on a short 130 yd par 3 my second year playing- never been closer than that

I mean, assuming he breaks the record this year, next year will 1000% be his last but one I think he's 100% reporting for. It'll be his retirement tour, but there's no way he re-signs in Washington. He's always said he wanted to go back home and end his career playing in the KHL/Dynamo Moscow.

even though the Caps are a division rival I actually hope they stay good for a while longer so Ovi sticks around. want to see him hit 1000

Yeah but he could always do that at age 42 or 43. It's not like the KHL is going to turn him down.

I find myself annoyed at the knowledge that even after Ovechkin breaks the record, there will still be people saying Bossy or Gretzky or Lemieux is the greatest goal scorer.

If this guy breaks the record and wins a Rocket on route to that feat at 39 years old. There is zero doubt that he is the greatest goalscorer this sport has ever seen, zero.

I think Ovie is the greatest, but I'd honestly pick a prime Lemieux for pure goalscoring over a prime Ovie.
Btw, as a huge Gretzky fan I have no issue with Ovie breaking the record the way he plays now. Quite the opposite. It would be really cool to see him go for 1000, but that's probably a stretch.
If they are Cup contenders, I’d be really surprised if he walked away.

Gretzky being so obviously the best forward of all time is boring.

I can see Ovi staying past next season. He's still producing at a high level. He seems to be having a great time. He's definitely not out there just to break a record. He is playing unselfishly and the team is doing great.
Likely boils down to health. If the genetic freak is still able to play similar to how he's doing this season he will stick around to go for 1000 goals. He won't be THAT old. He can do KHL stuff in his mid-40s and be productive. He's a competitor. He won't walk away from the Caps if he still feels good physically and thinks he can contribute.
The silly offseason narrative that the Caps were screwing the team over by re-signing Ovi just for a sideshow goals record at least has been busted up.

Everybody is probably underestimating what a great impact getting rid of buttery soft players like Backstrom and Oshie has had on Ovechkin. Spending time with guys like that will take a toll on you mentally, especially someone like Backstrom. Not surprised Ovechkin has bounced back.

I love Ovechkin - he’s one of my favorite players ever and a hockey hero of mine growing up. He’s not coming close to 1,000 dude lol

We might have a decent chance of being Cup contenders next year, actually, when $15 mil gets freed up for a roster boost after Backstrom’s and Oshie’s contracts end.
So, he could get his chance to win the second Cup in his final year. But I just don’t see him sticking around beyond this.

Odds are against it, just as they were against Gretzky's goals record ever being broken, and just as they are against a man of Ovi's age scoring like he's scoring this season. He may very well finish this season around 900 goals. If he plays two more seasons beyond that he could be close to 1000. Ovi is a different specimen when it comes to aging.

I am a bit stunned why anyone would call Osh a “buttery soft player”. There is a reason why the Caps’ fans have called him a “honey badger”. When he was healthy he was absolutely relentless for his size.

Never thought as Oshie as soft as butter, your team has some softer players compared to Oshie.
