Ovechkin Milestone Thread - Countdown to 894

Tell you what, I know he has haters and people who are all about him. As a neutral fan who just loves great players, this guy is going to be missed when he retires. Unreal he's 39 and scoring like this still, wish the Flyers had a guy even close to Ovechkin in my lifetime, enjoy him while it lasts. It's seems almost impossible he just find ways to adapt to keep scoring even though he's a shell of what he was when he burst on to the scene, but that's how the greats do it. I feel like that goal where he falls down and sweeps it on his back not even looking and it goes in is a complete microcosm of his entire career.

Another cool fact is that he has a great chance to break the record for most goals by a 39 year old at 39 goals by Gordie Howe, he was 6 goals off the record for 38 year olds held by Brett Hull

Ovie holds the goal by age record for:
37
36
34
Age x seasons - Ovi’s ranks:
20 = 5th
22 = 4th
23 = 8th
28 = 10th
29 = 9th
30 = 6th
32 = 3rd
33 = 2nd
34 = 1st (in 68gp)
36 = 1st
37 = 1st (in 72gp)
38 = 2nd
39 = Needs 40 for 1st or 30 for 2nd

All this is despite most people on the list at each age bracket being in much higher scoring eras when you look at it. Incredible.

If only OV were a "good ol' Canadian boy" he'd have God-status at this point

Somehow the 1972 Summit hate has metastasized for many over decades and the hate has been handed down and instilled over generations to some
How high Alex Owen of Toronto, "the curse breaker", lifelong Leaf, would have been ranked all-time? :oops:

I don't get how 1972 Series made Canadians hate Soviets/Russians.

Canadians were playing dirty trying just to bully/injury Soviet players. They tried to hunt down Kharlamov pretty bad & they did it succesfully.
You don’t have to go all the way back to 1972. There are much more recent world events you could point to that may have caused a certain distaste for Russian players. Whether or not you consider it fair to the players, some people think that way.

I've seen this twice now and I don't understand where the numbers are coming from. His aggregate +/- over his career is +54.

I think the way Ovechkin wants it to play out is to break the record this season and then next summer the Caps and Ovie announce 2025-26 will be his last season.

2025-26 will be his farewell tour season.
He'll probably announce he's going for 1000 after he breaks Gretzky's record. Then it's time for retirement.

Playing on every PP and no PKs drastically enhances the stat the poster is showing. It's the reason +- is an even strength or short handed stat.

Enhances not only his stat, but his team too. Many times his PP presence translated 5 on 4 situation to 4 on 3 (one D covers him separately). WSH have the best PP% since 2005/06 (even considering last awful seasons).

Easy to post stats that include significant power play time.

He’s +54 when both teams have the same number of players.

And that includes a shit ton of empty betters so it’s even less impressive.

While playing a lot of his career on the top regular season team.

Bet if you took the median player on the Caps each year during his tenure they would be higher.

Been past the second round once.

There’s a reason why Bruce Boudreau said he’s not good without the puck.

Because he’s not.

Floater.

You guys will remember him as a top 10 guy because stats.

But definitely not in terms of actually winning.

In reality he’s closer to Brett Hull.

All goals count the same.
No matter if you win by PP goal. It's still a win.
~1/5 of all NHL goals scored on the PP.
1/5 is a huge part of the game.

Take Ovi away from the Caps & the team is a lottery team during his career! Take away Crosby from the Pens & they still have a playoff team! Just look at the Pens record without Crosby for evidence of this.

Stats are numbers that express who won the game.

Holy **** you are dense.
