39 year old Howe was 3rd in goals and 3rd in points.
39 year old Ovi os currently 4th in goals (2nd in goals/gp) and 51st in points (23rd in points/gp)
I’d say Ovi’s goal scoring is better, but Howe was the better overall 39 year old season.
It gets a bit close if you look at Canadians only to try to adjust for the lack of nationalization of the NHL. Ovechkin is 9th in points/gp vs. Canadians only and is 1st in goals. And he’d be 1st in goals despite missing 17 games with a broken leg.

And so Caps got 100 pts and clinched playoff spot first, with very good chance to be #1 in the East as well.
I think it will help OVs chase, Carbs will keep managing his time/utilization (15.5 mins today).
6 in last 13 and ending season with 894 will be kind of cool, same number of goals, same number of seasons, another 40 goals season under the belt, whole summer of anticipation, exciting start of next season. But I am fine with 895

Howe doesnt seen human
The season after he had 76 44 + 59 = 103 !
that could be some indication that Ovi could have an even greater season ahead, cause
he is getting close to Howe territory in terms of high level longevity, but Howe is just sick anomaly.

not to take anything away from Howe, but it’s worth noting the “improvement” he saw in his age 39 and 40 seasons had a lot to do with the 1967 expansion which doubled the number of teams in the league.

My favorite part of that whole thing is that all of the cameras after that goal (on local broadcast) kept showing Ovechkin on the bench with Mangiapane (88) and Dubois (80)

League saw a huge expansion that season which absolutely impacted the numbers.
Imagine he ties it this season and goes on to win another cup.
next season first 5 home games tickets will be insanely priced
Or he can score 894 and stay cold scoring 0 goals during 2 months so everybody will be just exhausted traveling with the teamPlease please please break the record by scoring 5 goals in one game Ovechkin.
It would be absolutely hilarious - NHL plans on getting the parade out in every game when he gets within 4 (after his 891th goal) if he does it unexpectedly with a 5 goal game before they can get going

HOWEver
All the 06 players in te league benifitted from this - Howe came third in goals and points. The raw numbers dont really matter (i feel this way about all numbers.... as much as I love this goal chase, its Ovechkin's scoring titles that make him the greatest goalscorer)
