Absolutely bonkers how different the projection is for the Caps and Pens.

Caps : a ton of young roster talent, great trades and signings and elite pipeline, first in the conference

Pens: best players are all old, bad trades and signings, empty pipeline, missing play offs again
Imagine if Ovi caught up to Sid in cups as an old man over like the next 5 years lol. And gets 1000 goals and re-passes Sid in points.

10 in 20 games... It's definitely happening. The best would be for it to happen on that final game of the season.
Idk the leafs had a few guys gunning for personal milestones last game of the season last year and then looked completely out of gas in the playoffs.

Probably want him to break it around game 17 or 18 if you’re a caps fan

Does anyone know if Ovechkin already has the record for the number of games he has scored a goal in, and if not, where is he on the list?
Yes, Ovechkin broke that record almost a year ago.

Alex Ovechkin enters the homestretch of The Gr8 Chase needing just 10 goals to pass Wayne Gretzky for the NHL record when the Capitals clash with the Red Wings tonight. Ovechkin is also on the brink of reaching the 1,600-point milestone.

Ovechkin owns a goals-per-game rate of 0.70 this season, which puts him on pace to pass Gretzky against the Islanders at UBS Arena on April 6, while Ovechkin’s career average of 0.60 has him tracking to break the record versus the Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena on April 12. The fewest games that Ovechkin has required to score 10 goals at any point in a season is five, achieved at age 34 from Jan. 13-31, 2020.

* Ovechkin could complete The Gr8 Chase around some notable anniversaries from Gretzky’s career. March 23 marks 31 years since Gretzky scored his 802nd career goal to pass Gordie Howe (801) for the NHL record, while March 29 will be 26 years since Gretzky had his 894th and final tally. Gretzky skated his 1,487th and final game on April 18, 1999, with Ovechkin set to reach 1,487 career contests against the Islanders on April 6.

* Ovechkin needs one point to become the 11th player in League history with 1,600. He has 14-12—26 in 25 career games against Kane, with Washington going 14-9-2 in those contests. Kane has 10-16—26 and an 11-10-4 record versus Ovechkin as Detroit looks to reclaim its grip on the Eastern Conference’s final Wild Card spot.

So Ovie is at 885 goals with 1472 games played. Wayne 894 goals with 1487 played. Ovie tying or even breaking it on the same amount of games played as Gretzky would be poetic
He’d have to score his 894th in the next 6 games to match Gretzky, but has 15 games to go to be able to break record without playing more games than Wayne to do so

Wish we could get even more updated data here but through 830 goals, Ovechkin had 127 PP one timers. Take them away and that's still 700 goals and that was as of last January.

For Panger to say one trick pony on a national broadcast was embarrassing and bush league.

I don't think Pang was serious.

Genuinely confused what this post could possibly mean. Ovechkin detractors seem to have some kind of weird brain damage where taking shots and/or scoring goals is somehow immoral.
I was poking fun at a silly comment calling Ovi's quest "poetic". Not sure how it's poetic when Ovi has over 1,700 attempts to eclipse Gretzky. Far from an Ovi "detractor".

Good info, do you also know the longest stretch he had to score 10?

To hit 894 faster than Gretzky, he has to score 9 goals in his next 6 games. To match, 9 in his next 7.

He will of course be the new standard when it comes to 895 and beyond, should someone flirt with whatever the new record ends up 40-50 years now.

With it being so close and his stellar play this season, I'm no longer thinking it's out of the question that he scores those 9 goals over his next 6 games. I think it would be kind of sick if he does something crazy and scores 5 goals in a game for the first time ever and breaks the record, ala Gretzky scoring 5 to hit 50 in 39 in supreme style.

What a player. What a career. What a pleasure it was to follow him. Can't believe he's scoring at this rate and he's turning 40 this year.

This reminds me of I gotta go ask the hockey history guys whether he's passed Sid at this point. Or what's he got to do to pass him. IMO all time goal scoring record should do it and if he gets another Cup, I don't see anybody disputing it.
