10 in 20 games... It's definitely happening. The best would be for it to happen on that final game of the season.
Ovechkin about to break one of Gretzky's greatest records and the Caps having a monster year. How lucky are you guys?!I cant wait to see it
That’s insane. 109 players have hit the 400+ goal mark. Most goals from age 30 season and on:
Howe - 415
Ovechkin - 410
Esposito - 409
Bucyk - 374
Selanne - 338
Brett Hull - 328
Dionne - 321
Messier - 314
Jagr - 306
Gartner - 304
New favourite idea to celebrate -
Every NHL goalie he's ever scored on says a "Congratulations!" montage along with their corresponding goal highlight and goal #.
even split in half, you are in the top 1 % all time!Eight hundred and eighty five is a lot of goals.

Ovi has scored a hall of fame worthy number of goals just in the back half of his career after he’s past the statistical prime age for most players.
What a legend!
Mike Bossy gets a lot of credit for his steady 50 goal form and as he retired early he didn't have to face the inevitable decline in production. With Ovi, there isn't an inevitable decline in production. People of coming generations may see this graph and argue Ovi could've gone another half a career with 50 goals a season thus leaving hundreds of goals unscored. I mean, mostly tongue in cheek, but Ovi is making jokes real. This one might be even more interesting -- same data, just showing cumulative total goals per game over time.
Look how flat Ovi's line is. It's inhuman.

We've also somehow managed a really strong prospect pool, headed by Ryan Leonard, Cole Hutson and Andrew Cristall.Ovechkin about to break one of Gretzky's greatest records and the Caps having a monster year. How lucky are you guys?!
If he reaches 900 goals and the Caps either win the Cup or get dominated in the first round I could see Ovi struggling to find further motivation and maybe decide to hang it up in the postseason but other than that he'll come back next season.is he walking away and retiring as soon as he accomplishes it? He’s clearly super productive and not sure why he would.
If the Caps team was a lottery one I could see it, but this team is gearing up and will compete for the Cup this year and the next (most likely), so I don't see why he wouldn't stay to get a chance at another Cup ring.is he walking away and retiring as soon as he accomplishes it? I could be wrong, but I don’t see them competing for the cup this year and I see them taking a big step back next year. Too many things and players needing to play their best has happened so far this year and I think once the chase concludes, there will be a let down for everyoneIf the Caps team was a lottery one I could see it, but this team is gearing up and will compete for the Cup this year and the next (most likely), so I don't see why he wouldn't stay to get a chance at another Cup ring.
I honestly think Darren Pang should be fired. Not because I’m offended by the one trick pony statement. It’s not really accurate but I guess he does score a lot from that one place.
The real issue is …what’s your job? Yes narrowly your job is to provide colour commentary. But more broadly your job is to grow the game. Pang downplaying Ovechkin and the chase shows he clearly doesn’t understand that.
This is the most exciting regular season storyline in years. Act like it.

Spot-on. Reports of the Caps demise preseason were obviously wrong. This group has great chemistry and a truckload of talent, with more on the way as you point out. As a result, it's really hard for me to think Ovi is gone after this season as some suggest. You can tell Ovi is having the time of his life. Can't remember him smiling so much. He is calm, zoned in, and happy. Oh, and making all manner of history. Health permitting, it's no guarantee Ovi is on his last contract in the NHL. Ovi will be around as long as he's enjoying playing. There’s zero chance they take a step back next year. Their “overperformers” are young, big, and skilled. It’s no fluke. And their prospect pool is bananas. Just wait till Leonard, Cristal, Hutson, and Miro show up.
I think they have a bright future (much brighter than I'd have guessed 3 years ago), but they're due for some PDO regression. I'd expect them to take a step back for a season or two as the above will not all be immediate impact players. There’s zero chance they take a step back next year. Zero chance? As I suggested, I could be wrong....but next year, without the exciting chance for the record, I think that might impact the team and that, combined with everything seeming to go well this year.....I just think they fall back. There’s zero chance they take a step back next year. Their “overperformers” are young, big, and skilled. It’s no fluke. And their prospect pool is bananas. Just wait till Leonard, Cristal, Hutson, and Miro show up.
