Minus the WHA stats and Gretzky is at 1,016 goals 2,223 assists and 3,239 total points.

WHA really cant be notified unless you account for other major leagues aswell, as Ovie never had a chance to play WHA. So you have to give Ovie KHL in this comparison.

Ovechkin has scored 55 reg season KHL goals and 2 playoffs goals, adding up to 57.
Gretzky has 46 reg season goals in WHA and 10 playoffs goals, adding up to 56.

So, that doesnt move the needle.

What comes for reg+playoff goals and 1016.
Ovie has 956. Needs 60 to get there.

If he can add, say, 12 this year (21 reg games + playoffs to go), 48 total isnt undoable for next year if he can stay relatively healthy and stays at this level (he isnt skating or puck handling at all at this point of his career, just shooting the puck). Ist just a repeat.

And we'll see if he calls it quits after this contract. If Caps stay competitive and he keeps scoring 30+, I wouldnt bet on him not returning for another year or two.

Circumstances in Russia are a bit "problematic" in many aspects so he might not have the rush to go back just now. Would assume growing on the record numbers propably motivates aswell. Hockey is all he knows, he still loves the game. Im starting to lean on "one more year" approach as he shows no actual signs of the highly expected slowing down on the goal pace. And atleast he'll go to have that one or two seasons with Dynamo even if he doesnt have it in him to keep up with NHL, and that will mean the 1072 total goals is one and done by the end of that.
