Active sixty goal scorers this season:

Matthews(27) 1.4 goals per 60 minutes
McDavid(28) 1.1 goals per 60 minutes
Pastrnak(28) 1.5 goals per 60 minutes
Stamkos(35) 1.0 goals per 60 minutes

Ovechkin(39) 2.4 goals per 60 minutes

Who passed the torch to whom? ;)
Ovi’s on fire by himself.
And the torch is less than a fire 😀

Guys, we’ll remember this year for as long as we live, the way Ovi goes to the aim is like a favorite movie to watch.

Can’t imagine what a tribute will NHL prepare when Ovi retires.

No words left. Almost single digits, for the final countdown…

yeah, scoring goals is easy, McD just chose to save himself for playoffs like Crosby,
regular season is not important anyway

has anyone EVER had a goalscoring, or even a points scoring per game season like this at 39??

probably a short list.

23rd in points per game. second in goals per game.

thats f***ed.
Howe at 39 years old was 3rd in goals and 3rd in points. If you compared Ovi vs only Canadian players (to emulate the pre-nationalization of hockey and the NHL), Ovi is 1st in goals/gp and 9th in points/gp to try and give a more accurate relative ranking to the league.

Oates at 39 was 7th in points and 157th in goals. To me this is crazy from the points perspective.

Ovechkin is the GOAT goal scorer this is history we are experiencing folks :yo:

makes me really happy that his kids are both old enough that they’ll always have memories of this.

When Sergei first started going to the games you could tell he didn’t really get what was going on. They get it now, and anyone who doesn’t get the feels when ovi skates to the glass to celebrate a goal with his kids has a heart of stone

I would love it if he just had another great year next season and said, screw it, I feel good like Jagr, I’m having fun, I’m gonna score 1,000 and make my record absolutely untouchable. I have no doubt he is capable. Probably only needs a year beyond what he’s signed for at this rate, but I would be surprised if he has the will to play til 41-42.

It would be cool, and without lockouts and Covid he’d already be around 1,000, but records are made to be broken and I bet this one* stands for about as long as Gretzky had it. Which is to say I expect it will be broken in my lifetime.

Scoring is always going up, league will go to 36 teams which will water down defensive and goalie talent, and modern medicine and strength and conditioning advances will keep players playing at a high level at later ages. Advances in stick and skate tech will also disproportionately privilege offensive players, as will the trend towards embracing offensive defensemen

Not that any of that will diminish what Ovi’s done, since I think any records/stats have to be understood in the context of the era in which they were generated

*if he does indeed break 99’s record

I think he breaks it on March 30th versus Buffalo. About where he's pacing, they are on the road two games before and two games after so I think they'll press hard to get him there and it's a bad opponent.

It seems plausible to me. The speed has been gone for several years now but he's finding ways to score. His shot is the same as ever and his vision and hockey IQ are wildly underrated.

IMO players like Ovechkin and Crosby (like Jagr before them) can likely contribute for years beyond what normal humans can do. It's a matter of health and if they choose to stick around.

I think it's likely later than that, but with Ovie anything is possible.
