He's scoring at a considerably higher clip this season than Matthews in his prime ugh...

I know Matthews hasn't been himself because of injuries, but that's still impressive for Ovechkin (who was injured for six weeks himself).

I wouldn’t look at it that way in Matthews’ case. Ovechkin had two down years when he was the same age as Matthews and he had just gotten the captaincy.

Ovechkin is more productive at 39 than he was at 27.

One of my all-time favourite players and without doubt one of the greatest to ever play the game.

If it weren't for lockouts and the covid season, the record would already belong to Ovi.
Gretzky did miss 78 48 games from lockouts too. If we're being equal.

Can't see this record being broken again for a long time, if ever though. It's not just the number it's the longevity of it. Matthews is the only one current active who is even close to a reasonable number at a younger age. But that's still going to be difficult for him. Ovechkin had 371 goals in 601 games by the age of 28. Matthews is currently 389 in 603 games with the rest of the season to go. He turns 28 in September before the start of the next season.

Ovechkin had 475 by age 30. So Matthews needs 86 goals to keep in pace by age 30.

Gretzky was only affected by the 1994-95 lockout.
Wasn't there a lockout in 1992 as well?

NVM: I read it wrong. It cancelled 30 games not, 30 games per team.

Yeah, that's true. Even the most talented goal scorers can have their down years. I'm hoping it's just an off-year for Matthews and he recovers physically and pots 50+ next year.

That said, I don't think he or any other active player (excluding Ovechkin) has a realistic shot at 895. You need remarkable consistency, longevity and durability/luck with injuries to get there. I don't see him aging quite as well as Ovechkin has as a goal scorer. And that's no knock on him. What Ovechkin is doing in his mid to late 30s in uncanny.

Ovie’s ability to keep scoring at 50g/season clip through the entirety of his 30s is what will make beating him so hard.

Really the only way I see it happening is if the game changes and 80-goal seasons become feasible.

He now has 407 goals in 707 games for a goals per game rate of .57567 which translates to 47.2 goals over 82 games from age 30 until today.

He has 52 goals in his last 77 games as well.

Breaks the goal record and then goes on to win his second Cup. Cements himself as a top 10 all time player.

Yeah, I'd say that's a fair assessment. Matthews might have some injury troubles in his 30s as you said, but he's still averaging 50+ over the past few years. He went 60 -> 40 -> 69 and now on pace for 40 over a full season.

I don't know abouyt Matthews or anyone else ever reaching 895 (or whatever ends up being Ovechkin's final count), but I can see him pushing 700+.

These are goals scored since January 27, 2024 when he started to turn around his season last year:

jesus this guy is unreal. how many away now? like 13? he might actually do it this season. insane
Too often we don’t accept how great a player is until he’s retired for a few years. It’s the truly great ones we see as great while they’re playing. Howe, Orr, Gretzky, Mario, Crosby. Imo OV is in that company as a player who we don’t need time to go by to see his greatness.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves here. Playoffs are an entirely different season and anything can happen.
