Looked at Matthews goals scoring, he slowed down a bit this season scoring 20 in 40.

Auston recently played his 600s game, age 19-27, scored nice 388 goals.

For comparison OV in his first 600 games, age 20-27, scored 371 goals.
In his next 600 games OV added 363 more goals, we will see how Auston ages.
Note that in both OV 600 games periods scoring levels were lower than they are now.

For more comparison McDavid is closing on 700 games, 694 to be exact, scored 357 goals.

With season on pause, we could count OV goals after 1200 so far, ages 36-39.
He added 145 goals in next 265 games (a bit lower pace of 328/600, mostly due to first half of last year slump, likely playing injured). These games over 1200, late thirties, are probably hardest to match for potential record challengers, even in higher scoring environments. Lots of luck, durability and motivation needed, besides ability to reinvent, like previous posters mentioned.

As it stands now, Matthews is the only active player that even has a remote chance of catching Ovechkin. In order to do it, he will have to match Ovie's superhuman durability and also maintain his scoring prowess well into his late 30's. That's a tall order and Auston's recent injuries have me a little concerned for his longevity.

Howe didn’t play when it was a one country league. It was a one country league when it was Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal x 2.

I think he means that only Canadians played in the NHL back then. Less talent as the league didn't even include U.S competition let alone worldwide competition.

Jagr played in a higher scoring era than Ovechkin did.

Up to age 39: Jagr 3% higher
Up to age 35: Jagr 5% higher
Up to age 30: Jagr 9% higher

ya, i guess he had those early 90s years, and did come back for some post 2005 years.

His prime was during the Trap, but, he wasnt a very good example anyways as he wasnt a guy winning Rockets.... just a good goalscorer who played a lot of games. Too many of the great scorers from then didnt even really make it out of that era, or even through it, with much health.

Anyways. ya, so Ovechkin is even more badass, then. And also, yes, when i said 'one country league' i meant what you said i meant.
