remember it very, very well…same with point 1,851
That's cool. I remember the news surrounding Gretzky breaking the record, but I couldn't get a mental picture of the goal itself.

As for Ovechkin, the goal I remember more than others is the one he scored while falling on his ass. Otherwise, Ovechkin's career looks like a really big flip-book of goals scored from his 'office'.

My point was…goal number 895 for Ovechkin will be one that is remembered and replayed a lot (for years) no matter how it’s scored.

Edit…another example…Gretzky’s 50th goal in game 39 into an empty net….easily to remember, but the other 4 goals he scored that game? Not so much

Once again an empty net goal. I'm giving my best effort to remain objective, but I must confess that I'm far from impressed. It is sad to admit but Ovechkin is a one-trick pony. That one trick used to be one-timers and now he has reinvented himself as his only trick is scoring empty netters. Don't get me wrong, I still like the guy and I definitely think he has had a fine career overall.

Here's hoping he breaks the record on home ice. That would make the feat even more epic.

*goalie in, patented OV one-timer on the PP would be cool

He’s gonna do it….one ENG at a time. He's got six this year and his record is nine! Just a fun fact…Gordie Howe had 12 in his career. Game sure has changed.

Empty net points for top scorers are up all across the board. Teams are no longer throwing out their 3rd/4th lines in the final minutes to try and defend. Also teams are pulling the goalies way earlier. It just is what it is, times change.

I was going to say the same thing. It used to be that 30 seconds to one minute remaining was the typical time to pull the goalie. Now teams pull the goalie with 2 minutes or more on the clock. Can't compare.

I'm so sick of this entire thread getting drowned out by complaints and petty put downs about empty net points. The fact is that they do count, and they've always counted.

And lots of times an empty netter is not just a no-effort freebie. This one just now by Ovie took some intelligence knowing the shooting angle had to change around the defender, and judging the time left on the clock to net it with .1 seconds left. And a bunch of empty netters are actually quality plays. Breaking up the 6-on-5 int the defensive zone, there's often a footrace in the neutral zone for, fighting for a shooting lane, being out to defend a lead, and having a lead in the first place so that the opposition has to pull the goalie.

I wish posters would stop clutching at straws trying to make this accomplishment less legitimate. You can tell that everyone now realises he's going to get the record, and some people are just being pathetic about it.

I can count on my dick the number of 39 year olds in hockey history who could do that to Hellebuyck.

Here are some half-decent goals.
