Clutch goals (Game-Tie plus Go-Ahead)
Ov 434
Gretz 353

Shows a difference in eras and team dominance:
50% of OV goals are clutch, 39% for Gretz, 53% for Brett Hull.
Gretz teams scored a lot and blew out opponents a lot thus fewer "clutch" goals.

What’s with all the detractors lately? I can only imagine how many exist in the general public.

It reminds me of Hank Aaron passing Babe Ruth. A lot of people were disparaging Aaron’s achievements for ****ed up reasons.

Just enjoy the greatness. Many wont have the opportunity to witness a chase like this again.

A lot of people don't want him to break the record.

Many of them feel it should remain with a Canadian hockey player.

If you look at the hate players like Ovi, McDavid, Matthews, or even Crosby back in the day, it seems to me that vast swaths of NHL fans just like to hate on the best players in the game.

It's from 2007-08, but still something wrong. We have 144 GTG w/o this season, and plus there have to be goals during periods, when tied goals happened.

?

Seasons 2005-06/2023-24 = 144 GTG
Seasons 2007-08/2023-24 = 126 GTG
Season 2024-25 = 3 GTG

2007-08/2024-25 = 126 + 3 = 129 GTG (your screenshot)

2005-06/2024-25 = 144 + 3 = 147 GTG

Yep, but from naturalstattrick glossary I thought it's not from last overall score, but every play during the game Natural Stat Trick - Glossary:
Score State

All Scores - All scores, start to finish.
Tied - Any time the game is tied.
Within 1 - Play when the game is tied, or within a goal of being tied.
Leading - Play when the player's team is in the lead by any number of goals.
Up 1 - Play when the player's team is in the lead by exactly one goal.
Trailing - Play when the player's team is behind by any number of goals.
Down 1 - Play when the player's team is behind by exactly one goal.
For example, overall score 4-3, and during the game 2 tied goals
0-0
1-0
1-1 tied goal
2-1
2-2 tied goal
3-2
4-3

Ovi always out there scoring against empty nets and no name goalies like… Connor Hellebuyck??
Pretty cheeky comment considering that aside from the goal Ovi had a pretty weak game.

That being said this thread should just be about focusing on celebrating his goal race any veering off into other directions just gets sill so let's go back to the thread shall we?

JETS BEAT CAPITALS IN BATTLE BETWEEN TOP TWO TEAMS IN THE NHL
A battle between the Western Conference-leading Jets (37-14-3, 77 points) and Eastern Conference-leading Capitals (34-11-7, 75 GP) saw Washington erase a multi-goal deficit, Alex Ovechkin continue The Gr8 Chase with a third-period tying tally and Josh Morrissey net the overtime winner. Both teams boosted their point totals Saturday, but it was Winnipeg which was able to maintain its positioning atop the NHL standings and earn its sixth straight win.

* Ovechkin (24-14—38 in 36 GP) scored his 877th career goal, which was recorded at a speed of 88.79 mph according to NHL EDGE, to move 18 away from passing Wayne Gretzky (894) for the most in NHL history. The Capitals captain owns a goals-per-game rate of 0.67 this season, which puts him on pace to pass Gretzky on April 12 (at CBJ). Ovechkin (877-711—1,588 in 1,462 GP) owns a career average of 0.60 and that rate he would break the record in Washington’s last game of the season on April 17 (at PIT).

This is one of the best age specific productions ever. Already tied for 11th in Age 39 season Goals at 24, with only 36 games played. Only Gordie Howe (and in context, it was the exact season the NHL doubled in size, so half the teams were filled with players that were minor leaguers a season earlier) scored over 30 (with 39).

I think it's all tying goals not only those which lead to OT. It can happen several times a game and in games with loss (0 standing points).
Yeah, there are flaws to looking at GWG stats and GTG stats. The biggest flaw about GTG stat is simply that if you are a god of a hockey player and playing for an invincible team….you can score at will but would never score GTG because your team would never trail a game. Agree that you can get multiple GTG’s in a game, but I’m less concerned about that because it would mean you are still fighting to keep bringing your team back into the game

Kind of a weird stat though…Howe is the only player to score 30 or more in age 39 season, until this year when Ovechkin (barring something strange), will join him…but Selanne and Bucyk did it when they were older. Selanne paced for way more than 30 in his age 39 season, but didn’t play enough games…that tends to be the problem with older guys though as well, not just decline in athletic ability, but also decline is ability to stay healthy

It’s been like this since the beginning of time

After their first 8 seasons:

Gretzky - 543 goals in 632 games

0.859 goals per game

If Gretzky maintained that pace over his entire 1487 career games: 1,277.6 goals.

Actual total: 894

Ovechkin - 371 goals in 601 games

0.617 goals per game

If Ovechkin maintained that pace over his 1462 career games: 902.5 goals.

Actual total: 877

Gretzky had a 172 goal after their first 8 seasons.
