I'm a life-long Caps fan and an Ovie lover and I thought that's how this would end. 99.99% of the goal scorers in this league fall off a cliff long before they're 39. Ovie is a massive statistical anomaly.

(And don't get me wrong, I'm not an Ovi hater and I love that he has such a genuine love & passion for the game. Maybe that's why his Cup-winning reaction was so sad, it was just not genuine? I hope Ovi imitates Gretzky's celly in goal #894, running on his skates with his hands in the air. Then in goal #895 just go all out, jump on the boards and do whatever crazy stuff, hell why not even revisit the hot stick, lol.

So cool for us to be here now, marveling the almost 1487-game-long career, at the cusp of the immortal record. I hope the next two goals get scored within the next two games just to make it perfect. The form is certainly there: Ovi's scored in three straight; 4 in 5, 5 in 7, 6 in 9.

While I don't see the goal record getting broken again in a loooong time (even more so if Ovi re-signs after next season) the aforementioned scoring record of the NBA is surely not as safe: I can see better longevity becoming more common with all the modern medicine and other things; the league being more lenient towards high offense; the three point play making scoring in bunches easier (assuming the game isn't ruined by its overuse in the coming decades); having a score-first type of player go at it instead of the all-round LeBron.

Regardless, scoring in the NBA isn't as big a thing in terms of totals — totals are observed only for individual games and complete careers, what happens in between goes unnoticed.
