Ovechkin still needs 23 goals to break Gretzky's record. Ovechkin has scored 23 goals in his last 30 games that he played. With that pace Ovechkin would hit 895 career goals in his 1479th game. Gretzky scored his 894th goal in his 1479th game.

This thread is full of amazing stats and posts. This record is such a big deal, this thread should be pinned permanently. 🫡
It's an interesting point. Chances are slim we ever see something like this again - a player who topples one of the giant records in history, one nobody thought could ever be approached, let alone beaten.

Never say never about the future, however no individual has done anything so momentous in the history of HF Boards. We could do worse than pinning a thread to remind ourselves that we were there.

At this point it's the hunt to 1000 goals.

Dude is unstoppable.
I'm not sure he has 3-35 goal seasons or 2-50 goal seasons after this one, but I've learned to never doubt the great 8.

Empty net assist? Please tell me it was off the post and then tapped in. No time to be not scoring all the ENGs.
He was falling at his own blueline and made the choice to pass to Wilson who was breaking out vs shooting and risking icing. It's nice to see he also wants to win, and not just get the record.

It may be chalked up a bit to the final push for the record but with Ovi playing the way he's playing and the Caps being really good, he can't possibly be thinking about retiring from the NHL and either going to the K or hanging up the skates, right? I mean, Ovi has been a top 10-15 player in the league this year easily and the Caps look like legit contenders with the 2nd best record in the league. If next season is anything like this season you'd think he'd keep enjoying it enough to stick around as long as those 2 things last, which at this rate could still be several years past his current contract. I hope he does and gets 1000. That's easily within reach for him.

I think he gets 895 this season and next year is his farewell tour from city to city that he visits.

We will know this summer for sure as he will address it one way or another.

Ovi looking to claim one of those “on pace for” Harts they were handing out a couple decades back.
Potentially this year:
All time goals record
GWG record
50 G seasons record

I doubt he'd win it but someone would give him some votes

It’s just crazy that this 40 year old would almost certainly be leading the league in goals (maybe by a decent margin) if he didn’t get injured.
If my math is mathing and he had played all 39 team games his pace would have him at 32 goal. League lead is 28 at the moment so yep.

I'm not sure he has 3-35 goal seasons or 2-50 goal seasons after this one, but I've learned to never doubt the great 8.

He was falling at his own blueline and made the choice to pass to Wilson who was breaking out vs shooting and risking icing. It's nice to see he also wants to win, and not just get the record.

Whoever can pin this absolutely should

Me neither.

Also people are ignoring the fact that the Caps are a legit contender to the cup this year. Since we seem to be living in a simulation, I wouldn't be surprised if he beats the record and also wins the cup.

It's a shame. He'd already have the 50 goal seasons record were it not for Covid. He was at 48 goals in 68 games in 2020. He's had a good number of records held back due multiple stoppages.

There are only 199 players with at least one point since 2005/06 on WSH team.
So 61% of them assisted Ovechkin )

Also Ovechkin's goals generated 1479 assists, which is 20.6% of all assists by WSH players (excluding his assists)

As already mentioned OV is now #12 on all-time Point list, a list dominated by centers (due to the nature of position).
Only Jagr and Howe are non-centers above OV.

OV is very close to surpassing Stevie Y to be #6 on all-time Goals Created list.

Also OV is #3 on all-time Offensive Point Shares list.

It is safe to assume he is in similar place in stats which value Goals more than Assists (which is reasonable thing to me) and thus elevating wingers contribution.

With Matthews' durability concerns, I think his chances are rapidly dwindling. Which means that we're at least 20 years away from seeing anyone else make a serious run at the record. This really is one of the most historic things to happen in the lifetime of HFBoards.
